Chained Soldier (Episode 12) – Homecoming, New, Resolve

Shikoko reset the Unihorn’s personality and sat back to watch Yuuki and Kyouka fight it while Jouryuu flew off with Coco and Naon. Will Kyouka finally get to avenge her village and what will Yuuki get out of it?
Chained Soldier (Episode 12) – Homecoming, New, Resolve
What happened?
The Unihorn Shuuki was enraged by Shikoko and set its fury on Yuuki and Kyouka. However, it hadn’t counted on Kyouka being just as angry and delighted to be facing her nemesis. Yuuki was just happy to help Kyouka, and of course, stop the Unihorn from hurting his sister and his friends. He pushed back harder and harder, breaking both of the Unihorn’s arms. However, it changed its form, turning into some sort of twisted rhino. It charged at the injured members of the Demon Defense Force so Yuuki jumped in the way. It wouldn’t stop. Eventually, he managed to stop it by catching its horn in his mouth, much to the delight of Shikoko who stayed around to watch the fight.
The Unihorn changed back to its original form, but that just gave Kyouka the chance she had been waiting for. She bound it with her chain and then attacked with the combined force of all of her training. She’d put herself through hell in preparation for this moment and wasn’t going to miss the opportunity. Her attack sliced the Unihorn to ribbons. She was delighted and dedicated the victory to her village. Shikoko slipped away, aware that there were two exciting new toys for her to play with in the near future – Kyouka and Yuuki.

Tenka teleported the injured members of the Demon Defense Force back to the base where Nei arranged for them to receive medical attention. Then, Tenka returned to Kyouka and Yuuki so that they could discuss the future with Aoba. It ended with the idea that Aoba would go into hiding while they did some digging into the Onmyou Bureau. They also had some reservations about the current Supreme Commander who was blinded by her pursuit of justice. That was yet another reason for Kyouka to work towards becoming the next Supreme Commander.
Once back at the dorm, Kyouka went for a bath, leaving Yuuki to keep watch. Once she was done, she told him to have a shower and then go to her room for his reward. Evidently, he desired to sleep in the same bed with her, which was fine. Why they had to be in their underwear was beyond Kyouka. That damn pervert. However, Yuuki couldn’t sleep. That just gave Kyouka a chance to remind him who his master was since he disobeyed her and listened to his sister instead. She put him to sleep with a sleeper hold and then settled down for the night beside him. Meanwhile, Shikoko fed Coco and Naon to a mysterious walking egg that would soon become another of their kind.

What did you think?
So, this episode gave us a nice conclusion to the whole Unihorn saga and the fight was quite entertaining. However, I can’t help but wonder why they let Jouryuu fly away with Coco and Naon without putting up any sort of resistance, and also how Shikoko just stood there watching the fight. So far, other than the character designs, I’ve been fairly underwhelmed with how the characters have been developed. I’ve enjoyed this series, but it’s a far cry from Takahiro’s previous series – Akame ga Kill. It just doesn’t have the same energy, which has been a disappointment, especially as I read the first volume of the manga before starting this series and loved it.
I’m going to continue reading the manga to see if it is down to the adaptation or whether the story really does take forever to get going. As always Yuuki’s reward was funny, but it felt considerably tamer than some of his other rewards, which is odd considering he just helped Kyouka defeat the Unihorn Shuuki. Anyhow, this season is over and it’s not been as good as I was hoping. It was fun and had some nice moments, but the story really didn’t get going. Hopefully, a second season will pick things up and run with them since we understand the concepts and the characters.
