After falling off the boat, Akira and Shizuka find themselves stranded on a deserted island. Akira is ecstatic, Shizuka less so. They’re going to have to pull together if they are going to survive.

What happened?

Shizuka was furious that they were stranded on a deserted island. She was also pretty mad at Akira after finding him in the room on the boat with that girl… and both were naked. But why did she care what he did or who he did it with? To take her mind off things, Shizuka began to search for food and water. She needed to find a way to make a fire so that they could stay warm and turn seawater into drinkable water. She wasn’t having much luck, but every time she looked at Akira he was goofing off. He’d become so obsessed with his bucket list that he failed to take anything seriously.

Bizarrely, Akira managed to make a fire. Shizuka had found a piece of junk on the beach that Akira had discovered to be a lighter. He also found oysters in the shallow pools along the beach. How did he always come through when they needed him? Next, Akira suggested that they have an oil drum bath (which was on the list). Shizuka did not like the idea of that. However, as she thought about why she was mad at Akira and why she was following him it all came together. She’d been avoiding the obvious for so long, but she was in love with him. One of the things she’d always admired about Akira was his openness about his feelings. She was going to try to do better.

She found him crouched down in the woods, no doubt gathering fuel for the oil drum bath. Before he could turn around she confessed her feelings to him. She said it all. Laid it all out there for him to see. However, he said nothing. He didn’t even move. Shizuka got mad again and went to see what was up. It wasn’t Akira, it was a zombie. She turned and ran, discovering that there were more zombies and they were on a small deserted island with nowhere to run and no weapons to defend themselves. Akira found a small cave that led to a secret base. Didn’t one of the guys on the boat tell them about a secret island base? They found a journal of the researcher who had a person with them who was immune to the virus.

What did you think?

For a while, this series has kind of stagnated. It was still enjoyable, but it hadn’t hit the heights of the first six volumes. Well, the wait is finally over. This volume was excellent. There was the moment that Shizuka realised that she was in love with Akira and her confession which was obviously going to be a zombie was amazing. I am concerned now that she won’t get a chance to tell Akira because of how this volume ended, which was a real shock. They found the researcher and the patient with the zombie virus immunity and located the research facility that they could potentially use to stop the virus. However, they couldn’t get in. Akira and Shizuka walked around the perimeter looking for a way in, but in a moment when Shizuka accidentally told Akira that she would be with him until the end, she was bitten by a zombie. Now, they are in a race against time to develop a cure before Shizuka turns. I refuse to believe it’s even possible that she’ll die, but that was tense.

The other thing that I think it’s worth noting is that when they were outside the mysterious private research facility in Fukuoka, they were talking about the name of the zombie virus and how no one knew where it came from… That’s right, I think they are standing in front of the origin of the virus. The corporation is called Umbriel which I think may be a nod to the Resident Evil franchise in which the Umbrella Corporation was responsible for the zombie virus. Seems a little too much of a coincidence for my liking. Things could go from terrible to unfathomably bad in the next volume. I hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next volume to be available.
