Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Volume 1) – Akira of the Dead
Akira started his dream job in advertising three years ago and soon realised it was hell. Before long he felt like a zombie, but that all changed when an actual zombie outbreak meant he didn’t have to go to work anymore!
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Volume 1) – Akira of the Dead
What happened?
Akira Tendo was shocked to learn that the job he had always dreamed of was hell. His boss was a controlling ass who got upset if you didn’t ask his opinion and upset if you took some initiative of your own. His first day on the job lasted for three whole days. It had become a competition between his colleagues as to who could last the longest. None of them seemed happy though, least of all Akira. So, when he woke up one day to find the world had crumbled to a zombie apocalypse, it was the best news he’d received in years.
For Akira, the world had a new sheen. He relished in his free time, cleaning his room, making supply runs, and tracking down his office crush Saori Ohtori from accounting. If nothing else, he at least wanted to confess his feelings for her. Unfortunately, she had been turned into a zombie, but at least he got to say it. Once back home, Akira decided that he would use the time he had been given to complete a bucket list. He decided on one hundred things to do before he was turned into a zombie. He struggled to get past thirty-three items, but he could always add to it over time.
The next item he wanted to check off was drinking with his best friend. Luckily, he was still alive, although trapped inside a love hotel with a zombie. Regardless, Akira came to pick him up. They had fought before when Kencho had told him to quit his job. Now, Akira knew that Kencho had been right all along. They escaped to the roof when the zombies poured into the building. Akira jumped to a nearby building, but Kencho didn’t think he could do it. He confessed to Akira that his job was crap too and that he wanted to be a comedian. Akira challenged him to jump and make it funny!
What did you think?
Where has this book been all my life? I have not laughed so hard for a long time. This is literally how I picture myself in the zombie apocalypse. I loved the way it showed Akira slowly becoming a corporate zombie to the point that he was willing to switch places with people in a zombie movie running from a screaming horde of zombies. When his wish came true, I felt his joy. This book is hilarious.
I love the bucket list idea and I get the feeling he’s going to check off some of his items in the most spectacular ways. It’s a great concept, similar to the rules of survival in Zombieland, although we never got to see all of them. I just hope this series goes long enough to show us all the items on the list.
One of my favourite things was how completely unprepared and unfazed by everything Akira was. I liked the way it compared him to the girl he met in the convenience store who was massively prepared. She had been studying zombie movies for tips and was preparing a list of one hundred things she would need to survive the zombie apocalypse. I can’t wait to get a hold of the next issue to see what Akira’s next move is.

I’ll really enjoy this when it becomes an anime. I don’t do a lot of manga.
The anime has been announced for Summer 2023. I’m so excited!
This sounds great! I think a lot of people had a similar reaction a few years ago with the mass closures and lock downs. A great big sigh of relief. Yes, no more having to go into work!
It was hilarious and a little too true. I loved that approach to the zombie apocalypse.
