Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Volume 9) – Millionaire of the Dead

They’ve arrived in Osaka and discovered a couple of things. Firstly, Osakan zombies are crazy. Their old friend Takemina is still alive and well. And, finally, they’re going to have to run a bar to survive!
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Volume 9) – Millionaire of the Dead
What happened?
While at College, Akira and Kensho played rugby with their other best friend, Takemina. Well, playing rugby is a bit of a misnomer. They were the Water Boys or the Water Trinity as they were known. Anyhow, since leaving college they’ve lost contact with Takemina because of his insistence on not getting a smartphone… and the whole zombie apocalypse thing. Well, they are heading to Osaka in the hopes of finding him and the research facility that was working on a vaccine for the zombie virus.
They quickly found out the people in Osaka give a little extra to everything they do, even when they’re zombies. Their first encounter with Osakan zombies almost ended terribly until a masked stranger saved them by dropping a giant squid statue on the zombies. To their surprise, it was Takemina who took them to the local castle where a bustling market had been built. This was how the Osakans were staying alive and the new currency was canned food.
Their best hope of finding out about the vaccine was to get to the castle but to do that, they needed to get a lot of money… or cans. So, they decided to open a bar. At first, they were hopeless at it, but then they turned it around by making it a themed bar around the zombie bucket list. Soon, they had more cans than they knew what to do with. Well, that was until Akira lost his mind and ran off to the castle with it, selling everyone else out! However, Takemina had a plan on how to turn things around.

What did you think?
Since the end of volume six, I will say that my overall enjoyment of the series has declined. That was the pinnacle and while it didn’t complete the bucket list, it did feel like a great place to stop and bask in the glory of this weird and wonderful zombie story. While this was better than the previous two, it still feels like it doesn’t have the same energy as before. I liked the accidental nature of completing the bucket list, whereas now it feels very deliberate and forced. It’s still fun, but just not as clever or as intricate as before.
I was surprised to see Akira lose his mind over all those cans and then betray everyone, although it’s not clear whether he’s done that on purpose or not. I guess we’ll find out in the next volume when the people of Osaka rise up against the greedy fatcats of the castle when they play Canning or Zombie.
