Mieruko-chan (Episode 9) – Things She’s Seen Before

What happened?

The teacher introduces himself and does an attendance call, ignoring some of the silly requests from some of the students. Meanwhile, Hana is sure she’s seen him but can’t remember. Miko can’t forget him and is determined to make sure Hana stays oblivious. However, there’s more as there appears to be something following him around. It even appears behind Miko and says “better not look” before disappearing. Was it a warning from a concerned ghost or a threat from a possessive ghost?

It’s all too much for Miko who has been on edge for weeks now. She starts crying and can’t even tell her friends why. She claims a Junebug flew into her eye. Their only hope for a bit of normality is to go to the donut shop that is putting on a Halloween event. Survive the haunted house and win twenty donuts. Easy!

Hana is busy screaming at everything and anything. Yuria attempts to stay strong but can’t hold it forever. Miko, however, realises that she can react to them as they are just people in costumes. She’s safe and can scream all she wants. It’s the cathartic break she so desperately needs. Until she reacts to another monster only to realise it’s actually a real ghost.

Luckily, all the other monsters are there and chase them out together. Miko takes this opportunity to stop and scream at them all to stay away from her. It was meant for the real ghosts but everyone stopped for a moment. Then, they ran out and got their donuts.

What did you think?

All right, the first half of the episode was brilliantly creepy. It’s not just the ghosts hanging around the teacher. There’s definitely something off about him too. I don’t think he’s possessed, but I do think there’s more to it than we know so far. The way he reacted when Miko told him he couldn’t have the kitten tells me that he’s aware of a reason why she would react that way. The plot thickens, for sure.

When they went to the haunted house, Miko said it would be a good way for her to relax, but I was instantly concerned that she would mistake a real ghost for one of the actors, which she did. She was clearly lucky that it wasn’t an angry ghost that would attack her, although I don’t think Yuria could see it would mean it was a stronger one. That was a lot of effort for twenty donuts, but I would definitely be up for that. Still, Miko’s face as she laughed and screamed at all the ghosts was priceless. I’m so happy she managed to get a moment of release.
