Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers- (Episode 5) – The Seventh Brave

What happened?

Hans and Adlet race outside the temple and explore the surrounding woodland to see if the barrier is really active. It is, and there’s no way out. Upon returning to the temple, they are greeted by Nashentania who asks about their attempts and seems disheartened by their response. Regardless, they need to work out who is the fake Brave. Someone activated the barrier and it couldn’t have been a fiend. Mora, the Saint of Mountains decides that they should all tell their stories so far in the hopes that there might be a clue. Adlet goes first and doesn’t do himself any favours by referring to himself as the strongest man in the world several times.

One by one, each of the Braves explains who they are, where they were when they received the crest, and how they got here. Finally, it’s Fremy’s turn to talk and she doesn’t want to. Mora explains that if she doesn’t it will be hard to clear her. Finally, Fremy agrees to talk and asks Mora to remove her eyepatch and headband. It reveals a small horn and a fiend’s eye. Fremy reveals that she is the daughter of a fiend and a human, making her half of each. She was raised as a fiend who created a temple to worship gunpowder, which was how she became a saint. However, travelling with Adlet may have cleared her. She had many chances to kill him but didn’t. If she was the fake Brave, she would have jumped at the chance to remove one of the Braves so that she wouldn’t be found out. Then, suspicions turn to Adlet when he reveals that he opened the door to the temple.

I loved this episode. The way they’ve merged a fantasy adventure with a who-done-it story is incredible. The way that everyone is under suspicion and anything anyone says can clear them or further point the finger at them. It was also a great way to get past a lot of the backstory of the individual characters. And, of course, any one of them could be lying. There’s enough doubt about pretty much everyone that it makes it compelling viewing. You’re just waiting for someone to slip up. There’s a clue in here, but where is it?

Nashentania’s near fainting and apologising to Adlet for her outburst are wonderful at moving suspicion away from her, and not least because she had Goldov, her faithful companion who would vouch for her until the end. Hans is clearly one of the most suspicious members as, like Adlet, no one else has heard of him. He also accidentally found his way to the temple, which seems convenient. Of course, he would have had to go past it to get to the Land of Howling Demons, but no one is thinking clearly right now. Everyone is on edge, afraid that they will be singled out. And one of them has good reason to think that way.

Also, if the fake can get the Braves to kill one of their own, it would be a huge boost for the Demon God. Not only that but keeping them there allows the Demon God to grow in strength and prepare for them. It really is a deliciously brilliant plan. And that’s before you consider the fact that Fremy was bred for this very purpose. I remember being blown away the first time I watched this series, and this time was just as good.
