Shizuka was bitten and now it’s a race against time to see if Tsuru can create a serum from Izuna’s blood. Unfortunately, he’s not done this before with a human patient, so all they can do is pray!

What happened?

Tsuru uses Izuna’s blood to create a serum with her antibodies to the zombie virus. He’s seen promising trials with animals, but this is the first time he’s administered it to a human. Akira stays by Shizuka’s side as her body attempts to fight the virus. Meanwhile, the others begin to search the facility. Amazingly, the serum worked and Shizuka seems to be on her way to recovering. Of course, she’s going to need some time to fully heal and it’s best that Tsuru keeps an eye on her until things have improved. That means they are going to have to stay at the Umbriel facility for a little longer.

The facility is surprisingly well-stocked and fortified for an outbreak like this. Is it really a pharmaceutical lab? Akira and Kencho find some doors that their security pass won’t open, but there are plenty of other things to do. The crops are automatically maintained and there is clean running water. Akira takes the chance to complete some more items from the bucket list and invites Takemina and Izuna to add some things they’d like to do. He even asks Lambda, but AI are not programmed with desires for fear that they would take over the world…

Anyhow, one day they hear a helicopter overhead and then see several men abseil down ropes to a building. They are from the Umbriel Corporation and then appear to be heavily armed. The soldiers entered the secure area and are soon attacked by zombies. However, that’s the least of their worries and something breaks out of a containment tank and attacks, killing all of the soldiers. Akira and the others rush to see what happened and find themselves standing before a mutated creature. Tsuru believes it to be a biological weapon created with the zombie virus. Well, they pick up the guns the soldiers dropped and fight back because if that thing got out, it would be the end of everything.

What did you think?

It was fairly obvious that Shizuka wouldn’t die, but I can’t help but think they solved that problem a little too easily. There’s still a chance that everything isn’t fully taken care of, however, I don’t see that happening either. My guess about the Umbriel Corporation appears to have been correct as they are most definitely like the Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil. It’s not clear if they created the virus or were simply using it to create biological weapons, but either way, that’s some pretty clear Resident Evil stuff.

To top that off, we learned a little bit about Izuna’s past and how she used to be a gamer until her father died and her mother couldn’t keep up with the pressure. Sadly, she gave up on everything in order to help her mother. As a result, she lost that desire to do things. Luckily, seeing Akira and the others fighting against a horde of mutated monsters, she rushed in and took charge, declaring that she would become a pro-gamer so she needed the world to return to normal. That meant keeping Tsuru’s lab safe. Izuna took charge and scared Akira and Kencho a little. I think she’s going to be a great addition to the group, although they’ve just come up against the level boss, so anything could happen!

It was a fun volume and even though the resolution to Shizuka getting bitten was handled a little too quickly, I’m not going to complain too much. The story has improved over the last couple of volumes so I have hopes that it will once again reach the heights set by the first six volumes.
