Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story (Episode 5) – VR
What happened?
Lily tells Eve that she’s already accepted another job, but Eve doesn’t seem that interested, she even hits her drive into the bunker. She claims that she’s giving her opponent a handicap, but her mind seems to be elsewhere. Meanwhile, Catherine asks Rose if Eve would be willing to work for her, but is firmly warned against the idea. That just seems to get Catherine more interested.
Struggling to find anything to drive her on, Eve is lost. That was until Klein tells her about Virtual Reality golf and how there are big tournaments and pros even play it. Eve hurries out and finds a place where she can try it out. During the setup, the assistant at the centre creates Eve’s avatar using a number of popular items. Eve seems less than impressed, but she just wants to play.
Before long, she decides to check the leaderboard and sees that she is in second place. How can that be? The first-place player is playing now so she goes and sees them for herself. Amazingly, it’s Aoi and she’s both delighted to see Eve again and mad about how she didn’t keep her promise. Eve explains how she was delayed and that she was sorry. They play a full round together and then Eve says she wants to play with her for real. Aoi wants her to promise to make that a possibility by presumably trying to go pro. However, Eve is logged out before she can respond.

What did you think?
I can’t wait for the day we have VR like in anime. I don’t even care if I get trapped in for a while like in SAO. After the underground variable golf course of the last episode, the jump to VR feels quite natural and it was a lot of fun. Eve’s avatar was excellent so props must go to the assistant that chose it for her. I’m also loving the relationship between Eve and Aoi and can see it growing and growing.
However, there were also a number of more sinister moments in this episode that I loved. The idea that Catherine is interested in recruiting Eve is terrifying, especially as she will no doubt make her do some terrible things. Then, we have Rose who seems to be pushing Eve and Aoi together. No doubt, she was the one that told Aoi to enter the VR game as she was monitoring their conversation.
I think she has plans on getting Eve on the pro circuit so that she can use that to further her own agenda. It’s that or something to do with Aoi. This is more than just golf with a cute yuri love story! I can’t wait to find out what everyone is up to and whether Eve can really find a way to get on the same tournaments as Aoi. Also, what happened at Eve’s home that made Lily pull her out of the VR and how did she find her there? Rose is no doubt behind everything.
