What did you watch?
I have been planning on watching Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls for a long time. At one point, I started watching it so that I could comment on Yomu’s reviews on Ecchi Hunter, but I was too busy doing my own reviews and had to put it on hold. Since then, I’ve read three volumes of the manga and acquired the rest. Then, when I was ready to watch the anime all the way through, I discovered that it wasn’t available in my area on any streaming service. Obviously, that annoyed me, and since then, I have been collecting physical copies of all my favourite shows. It’s incredibly frustrating that they can just decide to stop streaming a show at the drop of a hat. I’m taking back control. So, I now own the Blu Ray and these posts are the result of that purchase. You’re welcome!

What happened?
The monster girl exchange program was introduced in the hopes of ensuring humanity could coexist. Host families were selected by a new government agency as suitable places for the monster girls to live and learn about our society while allowing humans the chance to learna about them. Kimihito had seen the news on the TV, but it didn’t sink in until a lamia, a half-human-half-snake was handed into his care. His parents were out of the country and he couldn’t bring himself to say no, so Mia moved in. Since Mia was cold-blooded, Kimihito would often wake to find her coiled around his body for warmth. She was also far stronger than a human, which left Kimihito struggling for air.
Of course, his problems didn’t end there. Before long, he found himself allowing another monster girl into his house. Papi was a harpy and a bit of a bord brain. Then, after running into a centaur in the streets and accidentally creating a situation, Centorea moved in too. As if that wasn’t enough, Mero, a mermaid, came next, and then there was Suu, a slime, who appeared to be there illegally. If only it stopped there. More and more monster girls found themselves drawn to Kimihito and his hospitality. As if that wasn’t enough, Agent Smith revealed that changes had been made to the laws, meaning that humans and monster girls could get married. All Kimihito had to do was pick which one… whether he wanted to or not!

What did you think?
After going through all that, I can confirm that it watching this show was well worth the effort and I”m very happy that I own a copy and can watch it whenever I want. This is a wildly funny series with a huge cast of bizarrely wonderful characters. Sure, the story contains all the standard harem tropes, but it still manages to make them fun and entertaining. On top of that, I definitely learned somethings while also solidifing some story concepts. Of course, this is an ecchi series and it isn’t afraid to throw boobs and panties at the screen, which I think will be a deal breaker, if that’s not something you’re looking for. Luckily, I have no problem with them!

What was your favourite moment?
I enjoyed the entire series from beginning to end and didn’t find any moments that didn’t work as well. That said, there was one part that really stood out for me and that was the episode that started with the MON girls ED and then went into a scene where Agent Smith’s team took down a group of orcs who had taken over a manga shop and were demanding new manga with orcs as the protagonists. It showcased the power of each of the MON girls and how well they worked together as a team. We also got to see them as they crashed Kimihito’s house whenever food was around and even managed to convince him to take them all on dates when a threatening letter was sent to him. However, there are so many great moments that I’m sure everyone will have a different one. I also really enjoyed the scene with the Dryad, especially when a giant Suu showed up to battle her.

What was your least favourite moment?
The realisation that a second season is incredibly unlikely definitely tops my list of greavances. Thankfully, I have the manga to fall back on, but I would have still loved more. Unfortunately, it seems to be all too common for good ecchi shows to get just one season. There are exceptions, but I can easily list off twenty ecchi shows that I think deserved another season. Where is the love?

Who was your favourite character?
There was one girl in Kimihito’s house who caught my attention and that was Centorea. I loved the chivalrous knight approach to things and she was also wonderfully sincere, allowing her to be more interesting as a character. Then, there was one girl from the MON girls who also piqued my interest, and that was Zombina. She was wild and incredibly outragous, especially when she went on her date with Kimihito.
However, there was one character who, for me, stood head and shoulders above all else. I am, of course, talking about Agent Smith. I loved Agent Smith. She was the main driving force behind everything that happened in this series. She accidentally delivered Mia to Kimihito’s house. She forced more and more monster girls on him. She told him to marry one of them in front of them. She wrote the threatening letter. If anything was going on, it was usually because of something she did. What a wonderful character to add to a story where the protagonist is usually a little indecisive.

Who was your least favourite character?
I think I would have to say Papi, but only because the other characters were that much better. Papi had her moments, particularly the one with Kii, the Dryad. She was also a big factor in bringing Suu into the house and offered a lot of comic relief. I liked Papi, but just not as much as everyone else. Sorry, Papi!

Would you like some more?
Absolutely. I am itching for some more and luckily, there are two OVAs and an ONA which is actually sixty thirty second episodes, although I’ll watch it as one thing. Then, once I’ve exhausted all of the anime available to me, I will dive into the manga. I have seventeen volumes and I think there are currently twenty with the series still on going. Thankfully, I don’t think I’m going to run out of monster girls anytime soon!

What have you learned?
My biggest revelation came when I was comparing a harem series to an action series. I primarily write action stories and one of the biggest obstacles is coming up with new and exciting action sequences. You can’t keep throwing the protagonist into the same fight over and over again. There needs to be variety or the audience will get bored. Well, the same is true for harem stories, however, it’s not the action that needs to be varied (although that isn’t a bad idea either), it’s the girls. Each of the girls was a different race of monsters, but the differences didn’t stop there. They all had very different personalities and their goals were unique to each girl. There was so much variety that it never felt like we’d seen that character before or that we were sitting through the same scene again. As always, variety is absolutely essential to almost everything.
