Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time (Season Two) – Super EXtra
What did you watch?
I watched the first season of Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time back when it aired in the summer of 2020 and had a great time. It was so delightfully absurd and the characters were all deeply flawed. Basically, it was impossible to look away for fear of missing something ridiculously outrageous. So, when I saw the second season was coming out in the fall of 2022, I decided that I needed to rewatch the first season so that I could review it in its entirety. It was an easy decision even before considering that each episode is only twelve minutes long. Several shows have struggled to live up to the standards set by season one, so how did Peter Grill do?

What happened?
The Warrior’s Guild was called upon to take care of a goblin horde that was attacking the nearby towns and villages. Peter Grill took the lead with Luvelia, however, Lisa, Mimi, Vegan, and Piglette were close behind. The goblins had entered heat and were desperate to mate, forcing themselves on all the men they could find. Peter Grill managed to stop most of them without incident, although Spartokos wasn’t so lucky. When they were done, he discovered that Luvelia had been captured by the hobgoblin generals. He had to save her.
The hobgoblins forced Peter to submit to them and then took him to see the goblin queen, the source of the pheromones driving the goblins wild with lust. When she had finished with Peter, he was left shaken by the experience, but then one of the hobgoblin generals released him and helped him escape. It turned out she knew him from when they were children and was keen to become a family once more. A real family… He woke up the next morning in bed with Gobuko and all the other girls. Has he no control?

What did you think?
There were parts of this season that were funny. I always enjoy that moment when Peter wakes up to realise he’s done it again. His reaction is hilarious. Unfortunately, that didn’t really happen very often in this season. I think the instance with Gobuko was probably the only time it happened. I also wasn’t too keen on the way the original girls kind of drifted into the background. The first season ended with Lisa making quite the move to secure Peter’s affection and I had hoped to see that develop.
However, it quickly became apparent that the series was just going to focus on adding more and more girls to the scenario, each time making it that much more ridiculous from a standpoint of Peter keeping this a secret from anyone let alone Luvelia. There were also some cringe moments that make anything the first season threw at us feel quite tame. I just don’t think it was as good as season one.

What was your favourite moment?
This may come as a bit of a shock, but I think the ending of season two was probably my favourite part. It certainly shocked me. I’ve never been a big fan of Luvelia. I find her naive mindset to be utterly bizarre. No matter how protective her father is, it seems unlikely that she would be that sheltered living in the Warrior’s Guild. So, seeing her go against her father and run away was an amazing development.
To make it even more impressive, she picked up Peter and rode away together leaving his harem of girls behind. There were times when I was feeling very sorry for Peter so this felt like a victory for him too. I may have had issues with several of the other parts of the story, but this worked. Plus, it feels like an actual end. I’m not expecting a season three anytime soon, which is fine.

What was your least favourite moment?
I found the arc that introduced Peter’s sister to be incredibly frustrating. Sure, it was funny that she was crazy and hated cheaters for about a minute, but to drag that out through two whole episodes was a bit much. It got to the point where she seemed to just want to kill Peter regardless of whether he was cheating on Luvelia or not. She was just completely unhinged.

Who was your favourite character?
I think Gobuko was probably my favourite of the new characters introduced in this season, however, Lisa is still my favourite and that probably hurt my opinion of this season as she went from a determined and powerful warrior princess to just some background character that goes along with the group. That was a real missed opportunity as I think the story would have been much stronger had there been a legitimate counter to Luvelia. Otherwise, it was just an easy decision for him to run off with Luvelia at the end.

Who was your least favourite character?
It has to be Lucy Grill as she was just too crazy. She would go from zero to one hundred in a heartbeat and be ready to cut Peter Grill’s little Peter off. The next second she would be apologising and everyone was friends again. She was even more annoying than Vegan and that’s saying something.

Would you like some more?
After two seasons, I can safely say that I think we’re done here. Had they pushed Lisa to be a rival to Luvelia then this could have gone on much longer, but with the direction it’s heading, it would just be adding more girls and more ridiculous scenarios. Each one would have to be bigger and more absurd than the last. That can only go so far before it loses everyone’s attention. I enjoyed watching it, but I am done now.

What have you learnt?
You can only throw so many good-looking girls at a show before it starts to become a non-factor. It can work providing you have a story that will keep the audience engaged. Even then, I’d argue that less is more and focusing on developing those characters and their relationships would result in a better all-around experience.
Also, be careful of the ever-rising stakes. I think there’s only so far you can go before you start to alienate too many people. There were several moments in this season where I couldn’t believe they went there – one was the cure for the goblin women that were in heat… let’s just say they had to swallow something… Going this way, it won’t take long before things get completely out of hand.
