What did you watch?

I’ve seen a few ecchi anime that have used the shorter episode length incredibly well so I’m always on the lookout for more. If I can watch an entire series in half the time, that’s a good thing. Well, each episode of My Wife is the Student Council President! is eight minutes long. You’re probably wondering whether that’s even long enough to develop a coherent story or if this series is just pure unadulterated fan service. I was wondering that too before I started. Well, let’s not waste any more time wondering and dive right in. You can expect spoilers.

My Wife is the Student Council President Episode 9 Ui finds the packet from Rin

What happened?

So, it turned out that Hayato and Ui’s parents knew one another and arranged for their kids to get married when they were older. Since Hayato’s parents were working abroad, he was living alone until Ui moved herself in. Now, Hayato found himself in an awkward situation. Ui was a nice girl who was determined to make it work between them, even if Hayato couldn’t remember her from his childhood. Of course, the student president and vice-president living together was something that would need to be kept quiet.

Part of Ui’s successful presidential election campaign was her desire to let love run free which went against the goal of the student disciplinary committee and its president Rin Misumi. She believed that hand-holding led to far worse and sought to stamp out all potentially lewd conduct at the school. With Rin and Ui going head to head over their differing beliefs, Hayato found himself stuck in the middle whilst trying to keep the fact that he was living with Ui a secret.

What did you think?

So, how did this series handle its eight-minute episodes? Incredibly well as it would happen. There was tons of fan service which was great and not at all forced. However, the most surprising thing was that there was a story and a healthy amount of character development. They even have time to make you care about more than just Ui and Hayato. There is a full cast including some rather eccentric parents and older siblings. I thoroughly enjoyed this season and am delighted that there is a second season that I can dive straight into.

My Wife is the Student Council President Episode 8 Kei feels something

What was your favourite moment?

Funnily enough, my favourite moment spanned several episodes. Obviously, there was a bit of build-up which was when Rin moved in with her sister Kei, the school nurse. Kei lived next door to Hayato so that was a wonderful complication to Hayato trying to keep his secret. Being neighbours, Rin came over to borrow a pan and then brought back some Miso soup to thank him. That’s when she found some panties and chapstick. Hayato tried to claim they were his aunts, but she didn’t believe him. Finally, he told her they were his…

The next morning, Hayato was on his way to school having spent the night studying. He was pretty tired and had all the visible effects of staying up too late. Kei dragged him to the nurse’s office so that he could recover. Of course, she decided that he was unable to sleep because of the cross-dressing fantasy and wanted to help him out. With Rin’s help, they applied make-up and attempted to dress him appropriately. Of course, he fell asleep while this was going on and woke at the worst possible moment. It was a fantastically hilarious scene and continued to give after that as Hayato’s cross-dressing secret spread through the student body.

What was your least favourite moment?

My opinion on this matter seems to be contrary to popular opinion according to the message boards attached to this series. I find the way that Ui just took over Hayato’s life to be a little troubling. Sure, she’s a nice girl and prepared to do what she needs to to get what she wants, but by forcing her way into his house she’s not really giving him much of a choice in the matter. I think it’s clear that he actually likes Rin more, but he finds himself in a position where he can’t really do anything about it without appearing as the bad guy. He could be more assertive, but he’s also trying to be polite and chivalrous, to his own detriment.

Who was your favourite character?

If it’s not already obvious at this point, I’ve hidden it well… Of course, it’s Rin Misumi. Ironically, I don’t agree with her policies and find myself aligned with Ui’s outlook, I find Rin’s character that much more sincere. I love how strong she is and also shy and naive. They are very much opposites of one another in so many ways and I think that continues to the fact that Hayato has one but wants the other. Maybe, I’m projecting… Either way, Rin is a great character with a lot more depth than Ui.

Who was your least favourite character?

She’s probably one of the least fleshed-out characters at this point and all she’s really done is try to kiss Ui and accuse Hayato of being a cheat. That would be Karen from the student council. I considered putting Ui here, but she’s still a sweet girl and has a lot of great qualities. I do feel sorry for her because she knows that Hayato isn’t as into her as she is to him, which ultimately saved her. So, Karen was my least favourite character.

Would you like some more?

As I said earlier, I loved this series and had a lot of fun watching it. It’s sexy and funny, has some character depth, and an actual love story… or two… So, it should come as no surprise that I will be watching season two. It helps that these are shorter episodes as it’s not quite a big commitment. If you really wanted to, you could easily watch the entire first season in a day without much of a problem. In fact, you should absolutely do that.

What have you learnt?

I’m a big fan of short stories. I enjoy novels too, but there’s something incredible about a tightly written short. Maybe, it plays into my love of efficiency. That’s certainly something this series has done incredibly well. There’s no surplus anything. We have just enough characters and have spent the time focusing on the ones that we need to tell the story. The plot has been focused and succinct with conversations often taking care of multiple things at once.

It’s been a great example of what you can do with less time and I can’t help but wonder how you could apply those principles to a longer work of fiction and maintain that sort of focus. I think you would end up with an absolutely riveting page-turner that you would find impossible to put down. And, if you have multiple books in a series that’s going to drive people to continue to read. I do love an efficiently told story.
