Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Volume 2) – It Was You!

Tanjiro survived the Demon Slayer Corp trials and returned to Mr Urokodaki and discovered that Nezuko had woken up after two years of sleep. Soon after, he got his sword, a crow, and his first mission as a Demon Slayer!

What happened?
Tanjiro defeated the mutated demon that had killed all of Urokodaki’s former students and returned home. Nezuko was the first to greet him which delighted Tanjiro to find his sister awake again. A couple of weeks later, a swordsmith visited Tanjiro and delivered his new sword. The Demon Slayers used swords that reacted to their abilities, changing colour. However, Tanjiro’s blade turned black. That was unusual and considered to be quite unlucky. Anyhow, the crow appeared and told Tanjiro of a village nearby that was plagued by a demon. It was his first mission.
In the nearby village, Tanjiro discovered that girls had been disappearing without a trace. He found the man that had been with the last girl to disappear and asked him to show him where it happened. Tanjiro could smell the scent of a demon and then, he caught a stronger smell. It was attacking again. He raced to rescue its latest victim and soon took care of the demon. However, he couldn’t get any more information about the demon called Muzan Kibutsuji. He did sense fear in the demon whenever he mentioned that name. His next mission took him to a bustling city where he caught a familiar scent. It was Muzan – the demon that killed his family!

What did you think?
Everything about this series feels rushed. I still can’t believe how much ground this volume covered. We seem to run from thing to thing, deal with it remarkably quickly and then on to the next thing. There was no time for character development and there were even several moments where we got an Urokodaki flashback to explain something he did to Nezuko that he hadn’t mentioned before. It didn’t make for a cohesive and interesting story.
It’s hard to explain, but this series struggles to do anything that makes me go wow! There is no wow factor to it, which the animation of the anime clearly makes up for. At best, this series is average so far. I hope it picks up because I want to enjoy it. I really do. It has all the elements that I should enjoy. I’ve read a lot of manga recently so I know when a series grabs me and it hasn’t happened with Demon Slayer yet. There’s a good chance I will read it to the end because I’m curious enough to see what happens, but I’m not in a hurry. Not yet anyhow!
