Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen (Episode 3) – What Are You?
What happened?
Inosuke closes in on Makio’s room and discovers that she’s not there. However, there is something in the ceiling and it’s moving. He races through the house, waiting for it to come down the walls. Unfortunately, when it does a patron staggers in the way and gets his head smashed into the wall by Inosuke. He tries to catch up, but the demon has gone.
Tanjiro is diligently working through his chores at quite the rate. He’s so fast that the house madame can’t keep up with him. He’ll have the whole place working like a dream in no time. However, he has noticed a foul smell in the air every time the sun sets.
Zenitsu hears a young girl crying and rushes to help. The room appears to have been destroyed and she is at its centre, crying. Not long after entering and trying to comfort her, he hears a voice behind him. He freezes. He knows the sound a human makes and that was not it. The oiran, Warabihime is not impressed with Zenitsu coming into her room and even less so when he grabs her arm to stop her from hurting the girl. He can tell she’s high-ranking, but he can’t let her hurt a little girl.
What did you think?
This is exactly what I needed from this series. There was no over-the-top goofiness. It was mystery, intrigue, and action. Not to mention the tension every time Daki was on the screen. That made her reaction to Muzan Kibutsuji that much more terrifying. Seriously, the demon designs are probably my favourite aspect of this series and Daki does not disappoint.
My main question, however, is whether it’s just Daki or is there more. Maybe, she has a way to move between the houses. I love the way she uses an obi-sash as her weapon like the arms of an octopus. She also has some truly terrifying expressions. It’s funny that Tengen wouldn’t know that a demon can tell the difference between men and women just from their smell alone.
Anyhow, this episode ended with a stunning moment that came after the ED. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Please keep it at this level for the remaining episodes. I’ll even allow a little goofiness in the final one if you do!
What have you learnt?
A lot of the ridiculous moments in this series come attached to Zenitsu, but this episode showed us that it can portray terror in Zenitsu without giant snot bubbles and wailing. We got the message without any of that and it was so much better. I’ve never had a problem with him being scared, it’s how they show it that disrupts the tone of the show. This was a huge improvement.
This is the show I signed up for originally and fell in love with through the first ten episodes of season one. I love the serious side of the show with its darker elements. I see a lot of complaints about fan service disrupting a serious show and for me, it’s the wild tone shifts that cause the problem. Anyhow, this episode was excellent. I need more!

The two sidekicks have definitely improved. The exaggerated ridiculousness of the two was almost enough to put me off this show.
Yeah, that was a big problem for me in the first season. It’s why I waited so long to watch this one too.
