Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen (Episode 6) – Layered Memories
What happened?
In the middle of their fight, Daki is suddenly struck by something. Then another and another. They appear to be parts of her obi sash and they are rejoining her body. Tanjiro pauses unsure as to what is going on, but he may have just missed his chance. Daki is stronger now and has thirteen obi sashes with which to attack. Then, she realises that a Hashira is here and receives a power up from Muzan’s blood.
Some people have come out of their homes to tell Tanjiro and Daki off for causing a commotion. Tanjiro tries to warn them, but Daki has already begun her attack, slicing through people and buildings alike. Even Tanjiro can’t avoid this one and is cut from his shoulder to his chest. He looked at the people dying around him and couldn’t contain his rage.
Despite his injuries, he caught up with Daki and asked her why she would kill people for no reason. That triggered a memory in Daki that wasn’t her own. It was Muzan’s from when he was confronted by Tanjiro’s father. Tanjiro kept fighting and almost won, but he had pushed his body too far and collapsed on the floor, struggling to breathe. Daki was about to kill him when she got hit in the back of the head. Nezuko had awoken.
What did you think?
The recap at the beginning of the episode is the bain of the binge-watcher. We literally just saw that moments ago. Anyhow, they did it again and this time the flashback was even less relevant. Tanjiro saw Rengoku’s father writing a letter to him in which he thanked him for his compassion and apologized for his actions. He also told Tanjiro that those blessed by the sun technique were always born with a mark on their head. Tanjiro, however, acquired his over time from a burn and then some injuries. Does that mean that there wasn’t something there, to begin with? Probably not, but why they chose to put that in the middle of the fight I’ll never know.
I love it when this series gets seriously dark though. Daki showed us just how much of a monster she can be, even after all the skeletal remains in her food store. It’s interesting to show this sort of righteous belief that the demons have. They are powerful and as such are entitled to everything they want and anyone that stands in their way will be damned. If only there were some parallels to something in the real world…
It’s worth noting that the Upper Six has been the same group of demons for a long time and these beliefs have probably been reinforced over time. Plus, they’ve obviously killed a lot of Hashiras between them so they’ll believe their position is justified. It’s going to be amazing to see if they can defeat Daki or not.
What have you learnt?
We finally got to see Nezuko in action and she showed us exactly why she should be involved from the beginning and not some sort of last-minute saviour. It’s like keeping your best player on the bench so that they can make an impact as a last-minute substitute. It was also great to see her without the muzzle. Hopefully, that’ll be the end of that because it is completely pointless if she can bite through it or take it off with her hands…
I think the problem is that Tanjiro still sees Nezuko as a girl. Now, I don’t mean that there’s anything wrong with being a girl, but his view appears to be that she is weak and needs to be protected. Which is crazy given how many times she has saved him. Maybe if he wasn’t as attached to her as he is, he would see that she could make a valuable contribution. I wonder if it will get to that point or whether she’s doomed to be a last-minute addition to every fight.
