Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Episode 24) – Rehabilitation Training
Tanjiro has mostly recovered from his injuries at Shinobu’s mansion and now it’s time to get back into shape, maybe even better shape, but it’s not going to be easy. If anyone has the determination to do it though, it’s Tanjiro!
What did you watch?
A lot has happened in the last few episodes, but the most notable one has been just how far from the Hashiras Tanjiro and his friends are. Well, worry not, it’s time to get back to training and see where they can get to. This is episode 24 of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and there are only two more episodes, so hopefully, we’ll be building up for a big finish. Let’s get straight into it, but don’t forget, there will be spoilers.
What happened?
Tanjiro and Inosuke were the first to recover, so their training began first. Each day, Zenitsu would lie in his bed and wait for them to return and each time they came back looking like they’d been beaten to within an inch of their lives. So, imagine Zenitsu’s surprise when he finally got to join them for training only to discover that they get to play with girls. Well, that certainly awakened the beast and even got Zenitsu fired up enough to invoke his thunder breathing.
As time passed and the training continued, Zenitsu and Inosuke eventually gave up and stopped coming. Tanjiro, however, refused to give in and kept trying. It didn’t seem to matter though as Kanao was just too fast, too powerful, and too damn good. Luckily for Tanjiro, the three girls that help with the stretching approached Tanjiro and gave him a hint. All the Hashiras are able to perform Total Concentration Breathing day and night, even while they sleep. That was more than enough to reinvigorate Tanjiro’s mind and determination.
What did you think?
I enjoyed this episode more than the last one. It had some great moments and some not so great moments. It was nice to learn more about Shinobu and her goals, although the little chat she had with the Fire Hashira at the beginning of the episode felt a little bit like a farewell moment. Could that be the big finale? Well, there isn’t long to go so it’s not a bad bet.
What was your favourite moment?
For me, it was easily the conversation between Tanjiro and Shinobu on the rooftop. I loved that she revealed so much without saying everything. From her early meeting with the Fire Hashira, he asked what she planned to do with Tanjiro. If he was to become another Tsuguko. Well, I don’t think he is.
It would appear that Shinobu’s sister was much like Tanjiro and when she died, Shinobu took on her ideals, but it was hard. She was angry at the demons for taking her sister. So, in Tanjiro she has found someone to take on that role, freeing her to take out her anger without remorse. Of course, the worry now is that what if that ideal was the thing that had kept her strong. What is letting another take in on leads her to be reckless. It was a great moment and no doubt a turning point for both characters.
What was your least favourite moment?
One thing that I really hate with training montages is when the trainer doesn’t actually train the trainee. We’ve seen it twice in this series. Sure, Urokodaki taught Tanjiro the basics and then left him to it, but it was the spirits of Sabito and Makomo who actually taught him how to put the training together. Likewise in this situation, Kanao failed to give any instructions on how to grow. They just seem to expect them to work it out for themselves. Well, luckily, Tanjiro was helped by the three girls otherwise he could well have gone down the same path as Inosuke and Zenitsu.
Who was your favourite character?
I loved the scenes with Shinobu, she’s quickly becoming one of my favourite characters in the series, but for this episode, I’m going to give it to Zenitsu. That’s crazy, right? Well, you don’t have to tell me, but let me try to explain. For the most part, Zenitsu was the same annoying person with a multitude of outrageous expressions and reactions, however, one of those reactions really made me laugh. That was when he realised what the training was and was thoroughly annoyed at Tanjiro and Inosuke. It was even funnier when he volunteered to go first and Inosuke commented about how Zenitsu was on another level, laughing at the stretching.
Who was your least favourite character?
Is Kanao even a real person? We’ve had no development from her. I don’t think she’s said more than a couple of words the entire series. All she seems to do is smile and dance around. It certainly makes me want to know more about her, so well done there, but at the moment, she feels like a doll.
Would you like some more?
Yes, unlike Inosuke and Zenitsu, I will be coming back for more. There are two episodes left and I really am expecting a big finish. Something shocking would be nice… sorry, Fire Hashira… Let me just confirm, I have no idea what is going to happen and am merely speculating. If nothing else, I would like to see Muzan Kibutsuji once more and hopefully as dark and mysterious as the first time we met him. That feels like so long ago now!
