It was Valentine’s day this week, which means everyone is getting all mushy and lovey… so I’m going to bring it all crashing back down to Earth with my top seven anime crushes.
Nothing says Valentine’s like listing your favourite animated crushes… Anyhow, before I continue, I should probably explain what a waifu is (I’m sure there are some out there that don’t know). Well, here is the dictionary definition. Yeah, it’s in the dictionary.
waifu. Noun. (fandom slang) A fictional character from non-live-action visual media (typically an anime, manga, or video game) that one is attracted to and considers a significant other.
I originally posted my seven top waifu almost exactly a year ago, but that post now languishes in my drafts after I relaunched as the Otaku Author. At the end of this post, I’ll list out the previous top seven. It’s interesting how things can change in a year. Right, let’s get down to business, shall we?
7. Boa Hancock (One Piece)
Let’s kick off the list with the dark and slightly unhinged Boa Hancock. As the captain of the Kuja Pirates and the former Empress of the Seas, it’s clear for all to see that Hancock is not to be messed with. She is powerful, fearless, and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. When we first meet Hancock, she comes across as a cold and vindictive monster who will do whatever she wants and get away it because she’s beautiful. Most of that remains to be true but seeing her fall for Luffy broke some of that icy facade. Hancock is beautiful and powerful, although she can be sweet and caring… as long as you’re Luffy.
6. Maki (Fire Force)
Maki is another powerhouse of a character and often is accused of lacking feminine charms, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. She is stunning and no one is as committed as Maki. Sure, she has a ruthless streak and if you get in her way or say something offensive, you better be ready to run for your life. I can’t see how anyone would want to say anything negative to her though. On top of that incredible toned and muscular body, she’s also into magical princesses and fighting. I don’t about you, but Maki is basically perfect.
5. Hibiki Sakura (How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?)
How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? rolled in out of nowhere and blew away my expectations. Hibiki was a massive part of that. Now, she is a cute, fun-loving girl, but she’s also determined to better herself and has an incredible outlook on life. This series had an incredibly positive message and it’s hard not to get motivated by it and her. On top of that, Hibiki is strong. She’s an arm-wrestling champion and can destroy a punching bag with one hit. Yeah, I know. Another strong girl. I’d say I was sorry, but I’m not.
4. Kohaku (Dr. Stone)
Just look into those eyes and come back to me when you’re ready. Kohaku is a goddess and should be worshipped as such. She is a fighter, but she’s driven by her love for her sister to be the best at everything she does. It’s impossible to not admire that. Her commitment to bringing Riri fresh hot springs water daily has no doubt shaped her body, strengthening her muscles and resolve. Riri believed she was going to die, but Kohaku refused to let her and even faced the wrath of her family to do so. Kohaku really is beautiful, strong, and fearless. Bow down and worship!
3. Rias Gremory (High School DxD)
Where do I begin with Rias Gremory? For starters, just look at her. Long red hair, bodacious body, and she’s a devil princess… On top of that, she is fiercely loyal to her family and will break anyone and anything that tries to get in the way. Another powerful girl, there really is a theme developing here! But Rias does have a softer side. While she’s often calm and softly spoken, she really reveals her vulnerable nature when she confides in Issei the things that are expected of her. You also wouldn’t think that a devil princess would get jealous, but it also shows how much she cares. Seriously, I love this series and everyone it, but Rias is the tops.
2. Esdeath (Akame ga Kill)
Esdeath is a cold and emotionless monster with a passion for murder and torture. Now, this may sound a little crazy, but Esdeath means well, at least when it comes to Tatsumi. There were a lot of touching moments where Esdeath showed her softer side and Tatsumi even started to feel for her despite her being the enemy and a vicious killer. For me, that’s what made her such an incredible character. She’s the villain, she tortures and murders without a second thought, but you can’t help but fall for her. At least, I can’t!
1. Saeko Busijima (Highschool of the Dead)
Are you really surprised? Of course, it’s Saeko at number one. She’s dark and dangerous, strong, determined, incredible with a sword, but also cool and calm, reserved and timid. With all the amazing girls in Highschool of the Dead, you’ve got to be incredible to blow them all away.
Sure, it’s my favourite anime, but is that because of Saeko or is it the other way around. I don’t know and I don’t care. All that matters is that Saeko is number one. I even wrote a piece of fan-fiction where I got to meet her… I’m not crazy, really! It was a setup. Anyhow, Saeko rules.
Well, that’s Valentine’s day well and truly over with. I hope you enjoyed my list of top anime Waifu. I know I did. At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that I did the same thing last year and that I would show you that list. Well, here it is:
7. Esdeath (Akame ga Kill)
6. Akeno Himejima (High School DxD)
5. Asuna (Sword Art Online)
4. Leone (Akame ga Kill)
3. Nico Robin (One Piece)
2. Rias Gremory (High School DxD)
1. Saeko Busijima (Highschool of the Dead)
Only three girls stayed in the top seven with Esdeath jumping up the table. There may be some recency bias in there, but that is how I feel right now. All of the girls, past and present are incredible and it almost feels wrong to rank them… well, apart from Saeko because she is in the lead by a long way. Anyhow, thanks for reading.
