Best Villain Spring 2020 (Sunday Sevens)

The Otaku Author Sunday Sevens Best Villain Spring 2020

I love a good villain! There’s something fascinating about these larger than life characters and their diabolical plans. Last season delivered some great villains but can Spring 2020 keep up? We’re about to find out!

Best Villain Spring 2020

Let’s be honest right from the start here. This season was not a great season for villains, at least not from the shows I was watching. As such, you may find some unusual choices in here, however, I will stand by those choices… as I made them… Anyhow, these are my favourite, villains, antagonists, and all-around chaotic characters. One thing that I’ve noticed with anime is that often times the villains are quite as clear cut as western media and that often makes them that little bit more interesting.

7. The Destroyer (Princess Connect! Re:Dive)

Princess Connect ReDive Episode 5 The Destroyer

So, the first name on the list is the Destroyer from Princess Connect. She was a member of the Twilight Caravan guild and had become infatuated with Yuuki after he gave her some food. The next time she saw him, she kidnapped him, tied him to a bed, and was about to put an enchanted ring on his finger. Luckily for Yuuki, Pecorine, Karyl, and Kokkoro were able to sneak him out of there. However, she’s still wandering around and if given the chance, Yuuki could be in trouble!

6. Boss Maju (Shachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle!)

Shachibato President it's time for battle Episode 6 Boss Maju

There weren’t any real villains in this series as it appeared like the world was turning against itself and these dungeons were the real source of conflict. In one such dungeon, they encountered a Boss Maju and his underlings who were overworked, underpaid, and hadn’t had any vacation time. This is terrifying enough, but he was also able to turn Akari and Marika into corporate slaves for a short period of time. Now, that’s just evil!

5. Kurt Baumeister (The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?)

The 8th Son Are You Kidding Me Episode 12 Kurt Baumeister

Again, The 8th Son really lacked a clear villain and it showed. It definitely made the series drift around a bit. In the end, they decided to turn Well’s eldest brother, Kurt into a pantomime villain complete with a ridiculous grin and wild eyes. If only he’d had one of those pointy moustaches too! I think he could have been a perfect choice had they spent more time developing him and showing how he was threatened by Well.

4. Headon (Tower of God)

Tower of God Episode 13 Rachel and Headon

Headon is the keeper of the Tower and as such is impartial to all things, seeking only to ensure that the rules are followed and balance is maintained. So, how could Headon possibly be a villain. Well, you just have to look at that sinister grin. On top of that, there was the way that he saw Rachel’s weakness and twisted it to make a game out of Bam. It’s still unclear exactly what Headon was up to as I doubt he would be unaware of Bam’s fate. Just what is he up to?

3. Christina (Princess Connect! Re:Dive)

Princess Connect ReDive Episode 7 Christina

Christina attacked Yuuki and his friends when the village they were working at was under attack from the Shadows. At the time, it was unclear why she attacked, but it appeared that she was working under the influence of the queen who turned out to be an imposter with some serious magical abilities. Anyhow, by the end of the season, we learnt that Christina was one of the heads of the royal guard, but she was openly questioning why a beast was the queen of a human nation. I feel like she was just having fun and seems to enjoy finding conflict whenever and wherever she can.

2. The Shadows (Princess Connect! Re:Dive)

Princess Connect ReDive Episode 7 Shadows attack the village

The Shadows were excellent. While they didn’t seem to have any drive of their own other than to replicate themselves by taking over living bodies, they were creepy as hell. In a way, they reminded me of zombies or the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who, especially with the way the jittered and jumped as they moved. I was not expecting anything like this in Princess Connect and it’s just another reason that it was such a fun show.

1. Rachel (Tower of God)

Tower of God Episode 12 Rachel betrays Bam

Of course, it’s Rachel. However, she’s not here because of her betrayal of Bam… Well, not entirely. The reason that Rachel finds herself as the top villain for Spring 2020 is that we got to see what she was going through and the reasons behind her actions. They weren’t noble or centred around some sort of deep belief. No. Rachel was selfish and jealous. There wasn’t much more to it than that, but watching her struggle with the task that Headon had given her and the relief when it was over was amazing. I don’t like Rachel, but I loved the way her character was revealed.

I’m not sure many of these will make the end of the year list, but they were all fun in their own ways. There is Akito from Fruits Basket that would have easily dominated this list, just like she dominates the zodiac Somas, but that will have to wait until the next round. Anyhow, I had a lot of fun watching this season and ended up enjoying more titles than I didn’t enjoy, so I can’t complain too much. There were a couple of shows that didn’t make it on to this list and I’m sure you can work out who they are and why based on my previous posts.

Obviously, these are just my opinions and I didn’t watch everything that was released. So, would you agree or disagree with my selections? Who were your favourite villains from Spring 2020? Thanks, again for reading.

  1. Of the shows I watched… only one had a real villain. And they’re a _beauty_… Sohma Akito of Fruits Basket.

    • There as many moustache twirling villains in this season. Despite me putting Rachel at the top I think the shadows were the most sinister. They reminded me of the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who.

    • I can see that. Haha! That looks like a good comparison with the shadows and Weeping Angels from what little I’ve seen of Doctor Who.
