Best Boy Spring 2020 (Sunday Sevens)

Can you believe I’m still talking about Spring? Well, you better get used to it because this is only the second of five posts dedicated to the Spring Anime Schedule. It’s also my least favourite name – Best Boy!
Best Boy Spring 2020
So, we know where I stand on the rankings of the anime shows from Spring 2020, but it’s time to start to get a little more specific. This is the one I usually find the hardest and I’m not entirely sure why. This time, I think it’s got to be largely down to ratio of male to female characters in the shows I watched and also that some of the guys are just massive dicks and I can’t for the life of me included them in anything with best in the title. Anyhow, Licht Bach is definitely out, but these are the guys that made it!
7. Brantack (The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?)

Let’s start things off with Brantack from The 8th Son. He’s an older wizard who takes Well under his wing and also the master of Well’s former master. Brantack likes to drink and has a pretty dry sense of humour. The lack of big male characters has allowed Brantack to slip in here at seven, but the guy does have cool sideburns and that’s got to count for something.
6. Rak (Tower of God)

Rak entered The Tower of God searching for a suitable opponent to hunt and he settled on the Black Turtle or Bam as we might know him. Then, in an unusual twist of fate, Rak was joined with Bam and Khun to move through the next stage as a team. I love the way Rak is a larger than life character who laughs and eats chocolate. Replace the chocolate with Meade and he’s basically a Viking.
5. Rivar (Shachibato! President, It’s Time for Battle!)

In Shachibato, Rivar emerged as the main rival to Minato and while there wasn’t really anything sinister about the rivalry or reason for it being a thing at all, it was pretty entertaining in a goofy kind of way. The real moment that Rivar stood out was when he faced the group of Famnela who chased him through the caves and made him their queen! He seemed to get the role of decoy on a regular basis, but this was the best one.
4. Well (The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?)

With unimaginable magic abilities and limitless potential, Well seemed to be determined to use them to reproduce some of the home comforts from his previous life. He also accidentally stole someone’s panties when he was trying to find tuna… It’s an easy mistake to make, we’ve all been there… Anyhow, Well was an interesting character and I still think he deserved a longer series to really explore the ideas going on, but I guess I’ll have to get into the light novel if I want more.
3. Bam (Tower of God)

You’d think Bam would have been higher being the protagonist of one of my favourite shows, but as an actual character, he was kind of bland. So, how did he make it to number three? Well, I think Bam is here on the potential of what his story will be. There’s no doubt that he had some incredible moments in Tower of God and I think him taking on the first challenge was probably his best moment for me. Bam has got a lot of development ahead of him and I can’t wait to see where he goes.
2. Yuuki (Princess Connect! Re:Dive)

Yuuki was pretty much the only male character in Princess Connect. There were others, but none that got as much attention. Even after thirteen episodes, he is still a bit of a mystery. We don’t really know what happened to him, although it’s hinted at, or what he’s going through now, but it seems to be fairly traumatic. Traumatic enough for him to lose his entire memory and not just things that happened in the past. He seems to have no recollection of anything. Even basic concepts like money mean nothing to him. I enjoyed watching his development and, of course, it was pretty funny seeing everything trying to eat him.
1. Khun (Tower of God)

Much like Bam and Yuuki, Khun has got some mystery to him. We saw a snippet of his past but I doubt that even came close to fully explaining what he’s been through and why he’s climbing the tower. What we do know, however, is that he is clever and focused, able to put together a plan, and willing to do what it takes to make it happen. I can’t wait to see what happens to Khun now that he has agreed to take Rachel up the tower, although I refuse to believe that he doesn’t suspect something.
Of the seven shows I watched, three of them failed to get a character into the best boy category, but one of those shows was an all-girl cast so Tamayomi is excused from ridicule. Shironeko and Plunderer didn’t make it and given how I felt about those shows, it’s probably not too much of a surprise. Next week is going to give me some much tougher decisions as I try to narrow down the incredible array of female characters. Does it have to be just seven?
Obviously, these are just my opinions and I didn’t watch everything that was released. So, would you agree or disagree with my selections? Who were your favourite male characters from Spring 2020? Thanks, again for reading.
