Chainsaw Man (Volume 5) – Minor
What happened?
Sawatari watched as the Ghost Devil squeezed Aki’s neck, but then it stopped, dropping him to the floor. He had been thinking of Himeno, particularly the time she convinced him to try a cigarette. She soon learnt that he was a minor and promptly took it back, holding onto it until he was old enough. When Aki looked up, he saw one of the Ghost Devil’s hands holding that same cigarette. However, there were now the words “easy revenge” written on it. He remembered that the Ghost Devil saw fear and as long as he showed no fear, he could easily defeat it.
Denji left Power fighting zombies on one floor as he climbed the building. Soon, he found Samurai Sword and was blown out of the side of the building, managing to change into his chainsaw form just in time. He landed on a train and was attacked again by Samurai Sword. A civilian was caught in the fray and when Denji tried to protect her, he lost an arm. Another attack cost him his other arm. But, he still had a chainsaw on his head. Samurai Sword attacked again. Denji was ready. He sliced Samurai Sword in two with a leg chainsaw.
After the battle, Power had somehow grown in strength. She also had two extra horns. It was apparently time for her to be drained to stop her from becoming too powerful. That left Denji without a partner. He was assigned the Shark Fiend, Beam who had begged to work with him. Aki, who was also partnerless, was paired up with the Angel Devil who didn’t want to work with anyone. While on patrol, Denji met a girl who seemed to like him. He met up with her again for coffee, although he hates coffee.

What did you think?
The first half of this volume covered the end of the anime and did it pretty much word for word. I get the sense that the Angel Devil knows more about Makima than he’s letting on and that could be trouble later down the line, especially if my theory that Makima allowed Himeno to be killed because of her getting close to Denji comes to anything. The most exciting developments came next, something that was hinted at in the final images of the anime.
Denji met a girl called Reze who works at a cafe. They met in a fairly typical love-meet, her jumping into a phonebox to escape the rain and finding him there. He reminded her of her dead dog. She laughed when he regurgitated a flower he had eaten earlier… Other than that, it was as if it had been set up. Of course, it had. The only question is by who and for what purpose. Later on, we learnt that Reze is very powerful and feared by the Devils when someone tried to use her as bait to kill Denji.
One thing about that scene that is bothering me was that Beam, who was hiding beneath the pavement just vanished. Could he have seen everything that happened and would he know about Reze? It’s an interesting development and once more part of me thinks that Makima either knows about it or is behind it, especially as it all followed on from their date where they went movie hopping in an attempt to prove that Denji had a heart. Makima has got me doubting the existence of coincidence. She might just be behind everything!
