Chainsaw Man (Volume 8) – Super Mess

While Quanxi and Kishibe discuss the situation, things begin to escalate out of control. Beam helps Denji escape, but he walks over a nail and activates the Curse Devil. As if that wasn’t enough, Santa is about to make her move…
Chainsaw Man (Volume 8) – Super Mess
What happened?
Quanxi kicks Kishibe out of the window and then the last of the American assassins. Kishibe survives the fall, the American wasn’t so lucky. That’s when Beam makes his move, freeing Denji. They race for freedom, leaping over fallen dolls, but then Denji stands on something sharp. Before he can react, the Curse Devil lifts him into the air and bites down on his neck. Tolka did it, but he’s not done yet. It turns out that Tolka is a doll as is the old man that everyone assumed was Santa. The Doll Devil was Tolka’s master and she’s ready to make a deal with one of the original devils.
She makes a pact with the Hell Devil, transporting everyone in the building to Hell. The fiends and devils begin to panic. One of Qnauxi’s fiends even begs to be allowed to kill herself, such is her fear of this place. The Devils that inhabit the primaeval fears are here and they’ve never been killed. One appears before them – The Darkness Devil. It rips most of the group apart with much effort. The Violence Fiend removes his mask and attacks, but it’s no use. Even Princi is defeated, but not before summoning Makima.
This whole thing was to give Santa Claus the power to defeat Makima and now she was in Hell facing the Darkness Devil. Amazingly, Makima holds her own and even arranges for the Hell Devil to take them back, but that’s where Santa is waiting. Denji attacks along with Quanxi. At one point, he poured gasoline over himself and found ablaze so that he could counter her powers over darkness. Things are getting intense and people are desperate.

What did you think?
This was incredible. The sheer trippy insanity that was Hell was unbelievably good. The way the Darkness Devil arrived was beyond creepy. What was with the astronauts cut in two praying in a row about? Then, the Darkness Devil removed everyone’s arms. They flew up in the air and even spelt Makima. There was no way she wasn’t going to come, especially when taunted like that. Of course, Denji setting himself on fire was awesome, especially as it allowed him to fight darkness with light.
The revelation that Santa was actually Tolka’s master and that the man we believed it to be was actually a doll himself. We saw the four children he had requested in one panel and then a finger effectively erased three of them. Everything about this volume was brilliantly creepy. The fact that they went to this trouble to kill Makima shows just how strong she really is and I can’t wait to find out what the importance of Chainsaw Man is.
This was just an insanely good volume and threw everything up in the air. It turns out that the Gun Devil is basically a small fry operative. He’s basically a joke by comparison. The way the devils and fiends were reacting to the Darkness Devil’s added to the level of terror. I couldn’t put the book down for even a second. I had to get through every page before I could even consider what it was trying to show us. This series is getting better and better.
