Chainsaw Man (Episode 7) – The Taste of a Kiss

Denji’s plan is to inflict more pain on the Infinity Devil than it can tolerate and surprisingly it works. Having escaped the hotel, Himeno suggests they have a welcome party to clear the air. They did try to kill Denji after all!
Chainsaw Man (Episode 7) – The Taste of a Kiss
What happened?
At first, Power was concerned that Denji was losing blood too quickly, but Denji realised he could drink the Infinity Devil’s blood to heal. Cut, drink, heal. There was no stopping him. Even when the Infinity Devil snapped Denji’s neck, Himeno used her ghost hand to restart the chainsaws and off he went again. After three days of nonstop fighting, the Infinity Devil gave up, offering Denji its heart which he quickly sliced in two, freeing them all from this nightmare.
As Himeno and Aki took down another devil, she suggested that they should have a welcome party for the rookies. Things were tense since the incident with the Infinity Devil. Arai and Kobeni were considering leaving to go to a private corporation. They did try to kill Denji after all, but then so did Himeno. She cursed their lack of boldness but relished the chance to have a few drinks.
They arranged the party so that Makima could be there. She had plans to seek extra help with Denji since the devils all wanted to get him. Something was up with that and they hoped to get some answers from her. It didn’t take Himeno long to get drunk and as soon as she was, she reminded Denji about the kiss. He was excited, but then Makima walked in. The drinks flowed, Power hoarded all the food, and then Himeno kissed Denji. It would be a first kiss that he would never forget, but for all the wrong reasons…

What did you think?
This episode really highlighted some of the differences between watching the anime and reading the manga. There was a panel in the manga where Makima asked about the kiss and Denji denied it. Then, Himeno mentioned it and he confirmed it. The manga was hilarious because it was the exact same image of Denji in both, just with differing text. That was far funnier in the manga than the anime. As you might expect the fight with the Infinity Devil was better in the anime, although it was good in both.
So, let’s talk about that scene. The dreaded kiss. The manga was worse, or maybe that’s just because I saw it first there. In the anime, I was prepared for it… well, as prepared as one can ever be for something like that. It still makes my stomach flip just thinking about it. The hardest part of all this is that Himeno was looking incredible in those final images of the episode. Damn you animators making her look that good after she just vomited in Denji’s mouth. What kind of crazy mixed messages are you sending us? Also, she’s still better than Makima.

It’s sad to see many of the anime-only viewers are unable to see the human, if not quiet, side of daily life activities. I think the reason why this episode features them drinking till they’re drunk at an izakaya for three quarters of the runtime is because doing mundane stuff like this are precious to people who have dangerous jobs. Think about the cops (earnest and not corrupt ones), firefighters, and other rescue workers. I’m able to see them in this scene that even at some point they had to discuss a member’s death on duty before going back to being drunk like there’s no tomorrow.
I don’t know about you, but I believe t’s rare to see common mundane scenarios feature in action shonen stories. Because at the end of the day, anyone on this Earth is a mortal being. You never know what’s gonna happen to you the next moment comes so that’s why these scenes have meaning though regarding Himeno’s drunkard act on Denji is questionable though it somewhat make sense when you see the next episode.
For sure. It was a great scene. I loved the banter and the way the characters interacted. It told us so much about them and also sets us up for what’s to come.
I think it’s essential to show us how they are in normal life as well as devil slaying. It adds some humanity to them.
