Chainsaw Man (Volume 3) – Taste of a Kiss!

Chainsaw Man Volume 3 Cover

Denji is trapped in a hotel with the Eternity Devil and it wants his heart. In fact, it’s willing to make a contract with anyone that brings him Denji’s heart. And after several days, the team are considering it…

Chainsaw Man (Volume 3) – Taste of a Kiss!

What happened?

Power was even ready to sign the contract, however, Fiends can’t form contracts with Devils so she’s just going to have to wait for someone else to do it. Finally, Denji decides to take matters into his own hands… Well, his chainsaws. He leaps into the Eternity Devil’s mouth and starts slicing. The Eternity Devil screams in pain, but Denji is running out of blood and his chainsaws are about to retract. Luckily, he realises that he can drink the Eternity Devil’s blood to keep going, so that’s what he does for three whole days. Eventually, the Eternity Devil gives up and dies.

After the harrowing events, Hayakawa and Himeno decide to have a welcome night out with the team to try to make them forget about how they all turned on Denji. They even invite Makima who offers to tell Hayakawa about Denji if he can out-drink her. He never stood a chance! Meanwhile, Himeno is steaming drunk and kisses Denji. It’s his first kiss. He can’t believe it, but also he’s distraught that Makima can see it. Then, Himeno throws up in his mouth… So much for his first kiss!

Later on, the entire team is targeted by hitmen. The Gun Devil wants Denji’s heart and arranged for a sweeping attack by Yakuza and devils alike. However, one of them is something other that a human or a devil. Himeno uses her contract with the Ghost Devil to save Hayakawa at the expense of her body, but even that’s not enough. Power ran, leaving Denji to face his attacker alone.

What did you think?

I can’t get over how many genuinely funny moments there are in this book. Power has so many great lean-in moments that I get excited every time I see a speech bubble attached to her. I also loved the reaction from Denji when Makima asked him about kissing. Two panels, same face, contrasting reactions. I’m still seeing a lot of similarities with Jujutsu Kaisen, but I don’t mind so far as this has been an insane ride.

At this point, I’ve seen four episodes of the anime and now read three volumes of the manga, although this post will come out long after the anime posts. So, right now, it would appear that Makima is dead. Now, I’m not buying that for a second and I’m still utterly convinced that she is evil. I hate the way she manipulates Denji, especially as she pretty much enslaved him the moment he became free for the first time in his life. So, something big is going to happen and it’s going to involve someone’s contract with a devil. Just what and who is yet to be seen.

This volume certainly delivered a whopper of a twist, although it’s bound to be undone. Of course, that doesn’t mean that everyone will survive. I’ll be a little disappointed if Himeno is gone for good as she was a good foil for Hayakawa in the same way Denji and Power work well together. I get the feeling I’ll have read several more volumes by the time this post goes live, so there will definitely be more. Stay tuned!
