Chainsaw Man (Volume 14) – I Wanna See Penguins!

Asa took Denji on a date to the aquarium. She hoped to get close enough to turn him into a weapon. However, the Famine devil created a situation to force Asa to do it by using the Infinity devil to trap them.
Chainsaw Man (Volume 14) – I Wanna See Penguins!
What happened?
Asa believed that she could make Denji fall for her by taking him to the aquarium. She had even memorised loads of facts about the aquatic life there and was busy telling Denji all about them. There was a schedule and they were going to stick to it. However, Denji just wanted to go see the penguins. After he’d had enough of her lectures, he walked off. That was when the Famine devil approached Asa. She knew what Asa was up to and offered to make it easier. Maybe, when she was hungry and desperate, she would turn Denji into a weapon.
Denji was annoyed to see that the corridor went on forever and instantly knew it was the Infinity devil. Asa thought he was an idiot. However, several of the school Devil Hunters club were also trapped there, including the one who Asa believed to be Chainsaw Man. Of course, he wasn’t. He was just a massive fan. Asa and Denji managed to bond somewhat, but rather than turning him into a weapon, she turned the aquarium into one and somehow managed to get them all out where Yoru took over and killed the Infinity devil.
Denji walked Asa home and offered to take her on another date. Maybe, he was starting to like her. Yoru took over and tried to make a sword out of Denji’s spine but it didn’t work. Maybe, he didn’t like her. Anyhow, there was the second date that would surely seal things. They went to Denji’s apartment to watch movies but they were interrupted by Nayuta, the reincarnation of the Control devil. She turned Asa into a dog and then erased her memories so she thought they were stood up. Meanwhile, Yoshida has met with the Famine devil to discuss something terrible that might happen soon!

What did you think?
So far, I’m not enjoying this arc as much as the first one. I’ve seen comments online about how at this stage in the first arc things were just as confusing and that we just need to give it time. However, this is the equivalent of volume three and when I looked back at my review for that volume, I loved it. This just isn’t as exciting. It’s lacking all of the personalities that made it so much fun. The absence of Power, Makima, Aki, Kobeni, and Himeno is really being felt. Asa just isn’t interesting enough to keep this series going and Denji without the others gets really annoying, really quickly. Of course, I’m going to keep reading in the hopes that it can recapture its spark.
Anyhow, we learned that the mysterious girl with the chainsaw earrings was Fami, the Famine Devil who is the sister of Yoru, the War Devil. She seems to want to help Yoru but also has her own thing going. The most interesting part of this book was the revelation that something bad is about to happen. Something terrifyingly primal. Then, we saw people killing themselves en masse. That even scared Yoru so that should give us some indication as to what we’re dealing with. Will it be enough to reignite my interest? I hope so.

Oof. That last page is hard to see. Reminds me too much of when 9/11 happened. I suppose it evoked the emotions it was supposed to!
Definitely! I’m surprised anyone is alive in this world with the presence of so many devils. Not sure which one did this but it’s going to be the main subject of the next book, I think.
