Chainsaw Man (Volume 7) – In a Dream

After the nasty business with Reze, Makima is keen to take a vacation and she’s inviting Aki, Denji, and Power. Unfortunately, almost as soon as she told them, word of the Chainsaw Man hit the news. It was a nice idea anyhow!
Chainsaw Man (Volume 7) – In a Dream
What happened?
Aki had lots of untaken vacation days so he could go, no one was going to stop Denji, but Power had plans… even before knowing what date they were going. However, the room suddenly filled with Public Safety agents who turned on the TV. A report on the Chainsaw Man was running. Denji thought it was cool to see himself on the TV, but Makima had other ideas. Everyone would know about Denji now and soon they would all send their agents to kill him. No one would want Makima to have the Chainsaw Man!
The Americans sent three Immortal brothers who had a contract with the Skin Devil and could change their appearance, the Soviets sent a man with a contract with the Curse Devil who is near the end of his life, the Chinese sent a woman that makes Kishibe look like a toddler, and the Germans sent Santa… and he might be the most terrifying of them all. Makima makes plans to protect Denji, but what can they do when up against some of the scariest names in the business?
It takes a while for the various assassins to get into place, but once they are ready everything goes crazy as all of the assassins attack at once, each looking to take advantage of an opening created by the others. Things take an unexpected turn when Kishibe sits down to talk with Quanxi. There’s nothing unusual about what he says, it’s the paper pad he holds up telling her that Makima is listening and that he wants to kill her. Is he for real?

What did you think?
It’s yet another fascinating volume of Chainsaw Man. I loved the last arc more, but this is very close behind. The sudden influx of new characters makes it less cohesive than just one new character being introduced and that makes it harder to follow exactly who’s who. It’s not impossible, but it’s something to think about. In a way, it certainly adds to the chaos that is prevalent in this volume.
There was a really interesting moment where the Angel Devil was talking to Aki about how devils are never really killed. They just go to hell and wait for the fear of them to grow strong enough for them to return. To do that, they need to be killed in hell. No one has any memories of hell except that they can recall a sound before they died. That sound was the sound of a chainsaw revving. Does that mean the Chainsaw Devil is “The’ Devil and if Denji stays alive then there is no way for the devils in hell to come back to Earth? That’s quite the acquisition if that is the case. Either way, Makima knows what she’s doing.
And finally, that scene between Kishibe and Quanxi was unreal. I could feel the tension but couldn’t read whether either of them was serious or not. I’m so excited to read the next one. However, why is there always a paedophile? We get it, he’s evil, but did we really need another reason to hate Santa? That said, his power is terrifying and it reminds me of the Magical Girl Apocalypse.
