Dr. Stone (Episode 24) – Voices over Infinite Distance

Senku’s phone is complete. Now, if only there was someone they could call… Guess they better build a second one… Before they get to that, Senku learns something new from the One-Hundred Tales.
What did you watch?
Well, here we are. This is episode 24 of Dr. Stone. I can’t believe the first season is now over. This series has been an absolute delight and I am so glad that I decided to cover it. There wasn’t really much chance that I wouldn’t give that it is post-apocalyptic and there’s never enough post-apocalyptic stories, especially in anime. For the final episode, you can expect there to be spoilers. I may even sneak Kohaku into a couple of pictures…

What happened?
The villagers marvelled over the telephone that had been the focus of their attention for so long. Sadly, Gen then brought up a very real point that they had no one to call. It would appear that Senku had no told them they would need to make a second one, given how much work it took to make one. In the meanwhile, they decided to test it out as a landline by running a cable from the science cabin to the chief’s house on the island. Chrome was given the honour of being the first person to speak into it. Riri was waiting at the other end.
When they heard Chrome’s voice come through, the children present commented on how it was like a speaker! Senku and Gen looked at each other and then asked how they knew of a speaker. It turned out that the fourteenth tale from the One-Hundred Tales was about a bee that would allow the dead to speak by sticking its needle into a gravestone. This made no sense whatsoever, but they assumed it must be a code. Senku raced to the graveyard and found his father’s gravestone. After some careful work, they discovered a glass record hidden within.

What did you think?
I still can’t believe it’s over and would you believe they managed to end the season on such a high note. For the last couple of episodes, I’ve been wondering how they’re going to fit the war with Tsukasa in and it appears that they aren’t. That’s going to be next season… that’s right, a second season has already been confirmed. Anyhow, this was a great way to end this season even if the war has been postponed. I loved that we got to see Byakuya and the crew of the space station and the gift that they left behind was priceless.

What was your favourite moment?
The message that Byakuya left behind for Senku was great and fit with his character and their relationship. I loved that they got Lillian to sing so that her song could be preserved and give hope for the future. The reaction of the villagers hearing something like that for the first time was amazing. Surprisingly, we get a lot of first-time reactions in this series and they never seem to get old. There’s a real joy in watching someone discover something new.

What was your least favourite moment?
I really don’t want to pick anything here, but I will say that they all put a ton of pressure on Chrome to confess his love to Riri over the telephone. It’s obviously the worst kept secret in the village, but still, let the guy do it in private and not with the whole village listening. Poor Chrome.

Who was your favourite character?
All joking aside though, Chrome has been a great addition to the cast. He’s not my favourite character in the whole series, that’s Kohaku, obviously, but he has been a real light and it’s no coincidence that this series really hit its stride once these two joined the show. Chrome really does need to tell Riri how he feels. He’s had more than enough chances already, but maybe there’s going to be a moment in the coming war where he’ll be able to show her how much she means to him.

Who was your least favourite character?
It’s Byakuya for not telling Senku how he feels about him… haha! Only joking. I love Byakuya and his relationship with Senku is not how many would view a loving parental relationship, but I get it and it’s very much how I feel. It’s fine to be close and open about your feelings, but it’s also fine to do things your way. They both know how the other feels and have a lot of admiration for one another. Byakuya built a village and created the One-Hundred Tales because he knew that Senku would someday awaken. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is!

Would you like some more?
Did I mention that there’s a season 2? Did I? Well, you better believe it. As of present, dates haven’t been revealed and there are all sorts of rumours flying around the internet. Honestly, I’d be happy to just keep watching, but whenever it comes, I will be ready for it. This has been my favourite series this year and I really, really want more. The characters have been fantastic, the premise is outstanding, and I just love the way we get to experience the wonder of discovery over and over again. Science is cool!
