Chainsaw Man (Episode 6) – Kill Denji
What happened?
They’ve tried climbing the stairs but it just brings them back to the eighth floor. If they go into the rooms, the opposite room is on the other side of the window. Space seems to wrap around itself trapping them in an infinite loop. To make matters worse, time appears to be frozen too so they can’t count on help coming. Then, the devil reappears, this time much larger and more grotesque. It tells them that if they kill Denji it will let them go free.
Kobeni and Arai are keen to submit to the devil’s demands. Even Power is ready to throw him in since her Nobel Prize-winning idea will be trapped with them if they can’t get out. Luckily, fiends can’t make contracts with devils. Power offers to wrestle Denji to help pass the time. As time passes, or not, the group become increasingly frustrated. There’s no food left and minds are starting to fray.
Finally, Kobeni and Arai’s fear feeds the Infinity Devil making it strong enough to push things forward. Kobeni reappears with a knife and attempts to stab Denji, but Aki gets in the way. Power attempts to stop Aki from bleeding out as Denji climbs to his feet and jumps into the Infinity Devil’s mouth. However, his plan it that he’s going to make that devil want to die first by inflicting unimaginable pain. Power is impressed. Now, he’s thinking like a devil!

What did you think?
I loved how tense this episode was. It did an amazing job of showing the other rookies slowly falling to pieces. Admitted Kobeni snapped almost instantly. At this point, I’ve read up to volume three of the manga which included this episode and I think the next two or three. I think I finally understand how the Zenitsu fans feel. In the manga, Kobeni was scared and lost her mind, but it never came across as whiny and annoying. In the anime, it most definitely did. I feel like there needs to be an effort to tone things down a touch so that we still get the message without developing a sudden hatred of the characters.
Once again, Power stole the show. I love the way she reacts to things in this episode and her zany idea to win a Nobel Prize so that she can become Prime Minister and submit the people to her will. Then, Denji dismisses it as normal Power behaviour. She just has so many fantastic moments that it’s hard not to love her. She is definitely my favourite character in the series so far. I was disappointed that we ended on that cliffhanger as the following moments are going to be insane. Guess I better jump into the next episode then!

Zenitzu and Pig Head almost ruined Demon Slayer for me. I am glad they are toned down a bit now.
Unfortunately my waifu is dead. Ah well. I can fantasize about all the deviltry I might get up to with Power.
Same. I remember the moment that I almost stopped watching in season one when there was Zenitsu, Inosuke, Tanjiro, and Nezuko all running round and around this little room. I was so close to just walking away. They have gotten better, but I wouldn’t miss Zenitsu if he suddenly disappeared.
Who was your waifu? Power is great though.
Himeno, of course!
Of course. 😭
While I can understand majority of fans that the anime version of Kobeni losing her willpower to Eternity Devil’s psychological powers has been turned up to eleven unnecessarily, I find it fitting with the overall tone as it depicts (via exposition) the emotional turmoil of a rookie woman coming from a discriminating, sexist household that forced her to do this dangerous job and her first day had to be this literally endless monster.
ICYDK, there were a lot of misogynistic fans, with the majority coming from anime-only viewers; sadly unsurprisingly, many of them are men) spouting nonsensical claims; e.g. “She should calm the f**k down and think rationally.” from a elitist reviewer who has no clue what it feels like to be a woman who has good reasons in doing this dangerous job, not to mention she’s a rookie so why he always put misogynistic expectations of wanting her to be a strong, fearless woman from the start.
As much as I want to see more strong female characters become scene stealers, I still emphasized flawed female characters, especially ones who are not written with a gender stereotypes tropes and/or a sexist/misogynistic mindset (*cue me hating Plunderer’s portrayal of women again 🤦♀️). I’m glad Kobeni wasn’t written with those narrow-minded traits.
I don’t have an issue with Kobeni’s reaction to the situation, I’m just noting that the feel you get from the anime is like turning the mange up to eleven. You obviously don’t get the same impact in the manga with capital letters compared to a character screaming for several minutes.
As to her actual reaction, that was completely understandable and you could see Hirokazu Arai going through the exact same thing. He tried to kill Denji too and hid under the blankets of a bed.
I think people try to judge everyone by how the more calm ones are behaving, but that’s not fair. Power is fiend, Denji is something between devil and fiend, and Himeno and Aki are more experienced.
Kobeni is one that I would love to find out more about. Hopefully, that’ll happen one day.
