After witnessing a horrific murder, Junpei Yoshino goes after the special grade cursed spirit and asks him a question. Luckily for him, the cursed spirit is in the mood to have a chat, but just what has he got himself into?

What happened?

Junpei is a high school student who has been on the receiving end of some bad luck. A girl targeted him to assert his power over some of the tougher kids in school. After receiving quite the beating, Junpei skipped school more often and went to the cinema to watch slasher and horror movies.

While there, he noticed the three guys that were giving him grief and they were just as obnoxious in the cinema, laughing and chatting, playing with their phones. This caught the attention of another person sat in the cinema who casually wandered over and told them they needed to learn some manners. If only that was all he did!

When the lights came on, Junpei saw the full effects of what this person did and it was horrific. However, he found himself running after the person to ask him if he killed those people and why. Junpei wasn’t exactly upset to see these guys killed and was curious to see what this guy could do!

Meanwhile, Gojou introduced Itadori to his friend/acquaintance – Kento Nanami. He’s a straight-talking businessman/Jujutsu sorcerer and he has little time for anything other than what he’s focused on.

He took Itadori to investigate the incident in the cinema, teaching him more about curses and how to use his powers. They came against two cursed spirits in which Kento decided to give him some lessons on cursed spirits. However, he soon realised that they weren’t spirits… they were humans that had been changed.

It turned out that the person from the cinema was Mahito, an unclassified special grade cursed spirit who is the result of man’s fear of man. Along with his companions who were created because of the fear of volcanos and forests, they are looking to cause some trouble.

Kento and Itadori are closing in on Junpei as a potential lead, but what will they find out and what happens if Mahito gets in the way?

What did you think?

The introduction of Mahito was a great moment. He is quite clearly insane and relishes killing people. However, Junpei’s reaction to him and what he did was surprising and will no doubt make from some interesting developments. I’m looking forward to seeing much more of the special grade cursed spirits and the crazy things they get up to.

I also really enjoyed Kento Nanami. He couldn’t be more different to Gojou, but that just allows for Gojou to be even more Gojou than before. It was interesting to see Itadori have to face the consequences of what he’s up against and get to see first-hand what makes many a potential Jujutsu sorcerer quit!

What have you learnt?

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but the variety of the curses makes for some entertaining episodes. Much like the Infernals in Fire Force or the demons in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, things have been designed in such a way that pretty much anything is possible. Of course, this just gets better the more wicked and sinister the cursed spirit.

It certainly makes for a more interesting series. If all the enemies were the same it would get pretty boring, so when developing a story it helps to come up with a system that will allow a bit of variety. It’s more interesting as an author too as you get to dream up all sorts of wild and wacky ideas.
