Dirty Pair (Episode 11) – Hah Hah Hah, Dresses and Men Should Always Be Brand New

What happened?

They’ve had no time off in months. Every mission that comes in is quickly assigned to them by the computer. So, before completing their next mission, they make a point of telling their boss that they need some time off. He agrees to give them a week off as soon as they’re done. A quick explosion later and it’s vacation time. Now, to find a date. Unfortunately, all of their usual guys are either predisposed or scared away by the mothers. Luckily, a package arrives with an invitation to a party.

They don’t recognise the guy inviting them, but he must be loaded to be sending old-fashioned-style invites. Before heading to the party, Yuri needs a new dress so they take a quick detour. However, they are mistaken for a pair of wanted criminals and chased out of the city. As they try to escape, they accidentally kidnap a group of children. Upon returning all the children, they are put in a cell until they can be verified as the Lovely Angels.

They’re not about to wait around though as they have a party to get to. On their way, they come across the police who have cornered the real criminals inside a bank. Yuri wants to go, but Kei needs to know what they look like since they apparently look like them. They do, but much older and more masculine. With that nonsense cleared up, they head to the party and discover it was their boss who invited them to a family gathering… yeah, groovy…

What did you think?

This episode pretty much summed up the Dirty Pair. They strong-armed their boss into giving them a break knowing that all they had to do to complete their mission was push a button. They struggled to find dates and took pleasure in each other’s misfortune. Then, we had the stuff on Cauld. A wonderful case of mistaken identity that could have been resolved fairly easily had Kei and Yuri just played along with the demands and had their identities verified without a fuss.

But that wouldn’t be Kei and Yuri! With a party to go to, they ran and it was hilarious. I loved the swarm of cops emerging from bushes and doorways as they chased them out of the mall. And, of course, as soon as they had a chance to see the real people they had been mistaken for, they had to see how close the similarities were. It was just a very funny episode that didn’t really go anywhere or do anything. It’s just Kei and Yuri being Kei and Yuri.

What have you learnt?

The mistaken identity trope is something you can have a lot of fun with and it’s something that can pop up anywhere. So, if you’re in a bind and don’t know what to do with your story, have someone mistake a character for someone else. The bigger the misunderstanding the better. Literally, anything can happen and there are any number of ways to resolve it. In this one, Kei and Yuri wanted to prove they weren’t who the cops thought they were, although they did also try to run away and that wouldn’t have cleared up anything.

Some of my favourite instances of mistaken identity are where the individual plays along and sees where it will take them. Given Kei and Yuri’s actions, it’s not hard to think that they are the criminals the police are looking for.
