Dirty Pair (Episode 14) – The Vault or the Vote? A Murderous Day for a Speech

Dirty Pair (Episode 14) – The Vault or the Vote? A Murderous Day for a Speech
What happened?
Kei and Yuri stormed into their supervisor’s office to demand an explanation for their missing overtime. Gooley is quite happy to explain that they abused their position by convincing their clients to have a party and letting them foot the bill. Kei broke into tears in an attempt to get him to change his mind and it seemed to be working. She had racked up some gambling debt and needed to pay it. But how much were they talking about?
Well, it turned out it was only five thousand, but still, what about their overtime? Then, both Kei and Yuri were assigned to another case, one involving a dead security guard who somehow turned up to work. Of course, they weren’t interested in working until Gooley offered them a raise. There were two likely targets for the person responsible for the murder. It was the date of the semi-annual maintenance of the Pandora Vault where criminal records were kept and one of the presidential candidates was giving a speech at the 3WA office.
Kei checked out the vault while Yuri headed to see the presidential candidate. They had a bet of five thousand that their location was the correct one. Then, Kei ran into Chan who wanted the five thousand that she owed him. She ran and hid in the ladies’ locker room, but he followed. There was a commission and Chan knocked over a locker, revealing another dead body. The intruder was already inside the vault. Kei raced to get there and ended up chasing the intruder back inside. Now, it was up to Yuri to get her out and she wasn’t going to let Kei get away with not paying her!

What did you think?
I am continuously amazed by how much Kei and Yuri can turn the screws on Gooley to get more money. By now, they should be the highest-paid people in the company. Maybe that’s why the computer keeps assigning them, assuming they must be the most qualified. Of course, they are, but it’s a funny idea all the same. It was also nice to see Chan again and while the Chinese stereotypes are still there, I don’t think it’s particularly malicious. At least, it’s nothing like Breakfast at Tiffany’s!
So much for the unbreakable security of Pandora’s Vault. Kei shot her way inside and then Yuri blew up its computer. I know she almost missed her opportunity, but that doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence for the 3WAs security. When they come up with something that is Lovely Angel proof then they’ll be cooking. This was a fun episode that once again showed off how much of a great pairing Kei and Yuri are. They feel so natural together.

What have you learnt?
Ah, the nineties! They loved their psychedelics so why not make a computer that can mess with your brainwaves and produce the same effect? That would be a terrifying weapon if someone ever developed it. Anyhow, this episode showed us how to make a believable pair. Just like real friends, there is an element of competition between them. The wager and the determination to see it paid proved that beyond any doubt.
They also make a lot of comments that if they weren’t friends could be taken quite negatively. Growing up in England, being able to hold your own with some banter between friends was essential. If you took any of it personally, it would probably destroy you. I see this sort of stuff with Kei and Yuri and that just proves to me that they are true friends. They have one another backs when the time comes, but they’ll also tease one another about the most trivial of things. It’s probably not the same everywhere, but I find it incredibly relatable.
