Dirty Pair (Episode 13) – What’s This?! My Supple Skin is a Mess

Something strange is going on in the sewers beneath Kei and Yuri’s apartment building. Luckily, the chief called in the 3WA for assistance and since Kei and Yuri are nearby, it’s down to them…
Dirty Pair (Episode 13) – What’s This?! My Supple Skin is a Mess
What happened?
A couple of maintenance workers went missing in the sewers beneath Kei and Yuri’s leaning apartment building. When the bodies were recovered it was not a pretty site. The doctor was certain that it was caused by a creature although he couldn’t say what. The building chief asked the 3WA for assistance and was horrified to see that Kei and Yuri has been assigned to his case, especially after the last time when they caused the building’s lean!
Kei and Yuri headed into the sewers and soon found another maintenance worker who had been attacked. They were then jumped on by a three-metre-long mollusc. Kei blew its head off allowing them to get the worker to safety. The chief managed to recover the body of the mollusc and believed the case was closed and without any damage to the building. Kei pointed out that it still had a head so there were likely more of them down there. Now that they knew what it was, they came up with a plan to flush them all out!
Everything was going perfectly until Yuri spotted something on the radar heading towards Kei. Something massive! It turned out that when they killed the molluscs they removed the main food source for something much larger. It was some kind of sea slug although it didn’t match any known species. Without its food, it came to the surface looking for prey. Kei and Yuri headed back into the sewers alone with a plan to take care of this monstrous predator!

What did you think?
Brilliant. I love that the tower is still crooked from the exploits of episode one and that it doesn’t seem to have changed much of anything internally. Anyhow, the chief’s reaction to seeing he’d been assigned the Lovely Angels again was hilarious, but even more so when he realised he would be sending them into the sewers. Surprisingly, everything was going perfectly to plan which put me on edge, waiting for something bigger to show up and I wasn’t disappointed. The giant mutated sea slug was insanely familiar. I feel like that design must have been used in multiple anime through the 1990s.
There was one moment that made me literally laugh out loud and that was after the first mission that had been going so well until the giant mutated sea slug showed up. It shot down one of the maintenance crafts which dropped its pilot into acid water along with the dying molluscs. They all returned aware that they may have just unleashed something even more terrifying, but the chief was determined to yell at them about it. Well, the final straw was when he was about to call them the Dirty Pair. Kei reacted before the second word, slapping all the fight out of him. His reaction was priceless.

What have you learnt?
One thing that I think this episode did really well was not to play down the horror of these giant creatures. The molluscs alone were pretty terrifying and no doubt made a real mess of the first two bodies, but the sea slug was far worse. The scene where they showed the aftermath of it attacking a swimming pool was pretty horrific and all the more so because of the small details. We didn’t see the attack or any of the bodies, if there were any, but you could tell just how terrifying it must have been.
One of the reasons that I really wanted to watch Dirty Pair was that I have an idea for a series of books where each one features some sort of horrible monster based almost entirely on existing life on Earth. I have written the first which is currently a novella about giant starfish. If you don’t know how a starfish feeds, you should absolutely look that up. This episode would fit nicely into that series, although I now need to make sure I don’t include a giant mutated sea slug in my series. Worry not. There are plenty of other crazy creatures out there.

Dirty Pair is a forgotten gem.
I’d love to see a follow on series similar to what they did with Dirty Pair Flash, bringing the characters into the current styles of animation. They could do it every ten years adding new ideas and styles.
