What did you watch?

No break this week, so it’s straight into episode 68 of My Hero Academia. We’ve spent a lot of time with Midoriya so far, so now it’s time to see what some of the other members of Class 1-A have been up to. I’m just going to say that I loved this part in the manga and then get straight into the review. As usual, there will be spoilers, but just for this episode… I promise!

My Hero Academia 4 Episode 68 Nejire Takes Down Two Criminals with Giant Quirks

What happened?

First, we see Ochaco and Tsuyu who have been taken on by the number 9 ranked hero, Dragoon Hero: Ryukyu thanks to Nejire. Together, the three of them take down two criminals with giantism quirks that are fighting. Doesn’t one of them look rather like the guy Mount Lady took down in episode one? All right, that’s enough reminiscing about Mount Lady… fine, take as long as you need…

And we’re back, but now we’re with Kirishima who has got himself an internship with Fat Gum who also has Amajiki, one of the UA Big Three, on his team. They head out on Kirishima’s first patrol and they run into a group of criminals. Well, more like the criminals run into them. Fat Gum captures most of them with ease and then Amajiki uses his quirk to take down the last one. Amajiki’s quirk allows him to take on the traits of anything he eats. One of the group managed to stay undetected and tried to save the others with a gun.

Amajiki gets shot and it seems to impact his quirk. The dark bounced off Kirishima’s hardened skin, allowing him to give chase. The criminal, cornered, uses a quirk enhancer and attacks Kirishima with blades that shoot out of his body. Kirishima hardens his body to an unbreakable level and beats him down. He tries to escape, but luckily Fat Gum has caught up and takes him out for good.

Meanwhile, Shigaraki has met with Overhaul and agreed to work together providing he gets the details of his plan.

My Hero Academia 4 Episode 68 Red Riot Suneater and Fat Gum

What did you think?

I think Kirishima had been massively underused to this point and I love that he’s getting a chance to shine. It’s also allowing us to see the Big Three and their quirks. Of the three Amajiki’s has to be the weirdest, even with how effective it is. I also love Fat Gum and can’t wait to see the rest of this arc play out. I don’t want to say too much, but Fat Gum is an excellent character and a perfect fit for Kirishima.

My Hero Academia 4 Episode 68 Amajiki as Suneater

What was your favourite moment?

It was awesome seeing Kirishima going through the motions as he faced off against the enhanced quirk of the criminal he’d chased into an alleyway. Seeing him questioning his ability and the strength of his quirk was a nice moment. I think he’s always been fairly relatable as a character and it’s moments like this that really help. Anyhow, when he hardened his body to the unbreakable state it left him looking even more like a monster than normal. He was definitely pretty bad-ass at that moment.

What was your least favourite moment?

I was a little disappointed that they squeezed the meeting between Shigaraki and Overhaul into the episode in tiny chunks. It worked with the dual analysis of the quirk cancelling darts, but this scene should have got more time and focus. I find it odd that this gets barely a couple of minutes, but Midoriya trying to get a stamp from Nighteye was an entire episode. The villains are excellent in this arc and they need more time.

Who was your favourite character?

Seems kind of obvious, but it had to be Kirishima. I love his positivity and attitude. It gets funnier that Amajiki can’t cope with it and especially as he’s just like Mirio who also tires him out. He’s kind of similar to Midoriya in a way. His quirk isn’t anything flashy or even one that you’d think would make him a special character, but his determination to improve has shown that any quirk can be special if you have the right mindset.

Who was your least favourite character?

The crazy villain with the quirk booster has to get it for shotting at the heroes and then running away. It’s funny that Kirishima continued to lecture him as he tried to bring him in. Also, I’ve got wonder how much control he has over the blades if he’s letting one shoot out of his eye. That doesn’t seem that practical and imagine the strain on his eyeball!

Would you like some more?

Just like Fat Gum, I would love some more. So far, it’s been all about moving pieces into place and it may be a little tedious and sometimes it feels like it’s not doing much, but don’t worry. I think it’ll be ready to roll in an episode or two and then after that, well, it’s going to be crazy and you’ll be grateful for the six days between episodes to let your heart rate return to normal. You’ll also be cursing the six days you’ll have to wait for the next one. Anyhow, this season is going to be awesome.
