That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Episodes 29-32)
Episode 29 – Prelude to the Disaster
Soei has spotted a hundred armoured knights approaching Tempest from Falmuth and reported back to Rigrud and Benimaru. They’re about to contact Rimuru when they get an emergency distress call from Eurazania. They are asking Tempest to accept their people as refugees as they are about to go to war with the Demon Lord, Milim. Soon after, Mjurran is contacted by the Demon Lord, Clayman and told to put up an anti-magic barrier over the town. If she does that, her love with survive! However, the three Otherworlders from Falmuth have arrived and are looking to cause trouble. Shuna sees through their tricks and asks them to leave, but they don’t want to go anywhere without a fight. That’s when the anti-magic barrier goes up, along with a prison barrier from the Western Holy Church…
Episode 30 – The Beauty Makes Her Move
The Otherworlders attack Shion and Hakurou who are almost keeping up despite the anti-magic barrier weakening them. That doesn’t stop the Otherworlders from gloating and acting like a bunch of pompous idiots. Of course, that’s when the knight from Falmuth arrive and instantly attack anyone and everyone in sight. They even set fire to the buildings. Outside the Kingdom of Ingrassia, Rimuru said farewell to his students and prepared to teleport home. However, he sensed a powerful presence and before he could do anything, he too was trapped inside a magical barrier. His opponent strode towards him with all the confidence in the world. She was Shizu’s former student Hinata Sakaguchi and she wanted revenge on the monster that killed Shizu!
Episode 31 – Despair
It looked like Rimuru was doomed as Hinata closed in for the kill. Luckily, however, he had managed to distract her with Ifrit, creating a body double and slipping away. She killed the body double with her most powerful skill – Disintegration. Once she was gone, the barrier lifted and Ranga was able to emerge from Rimuru’s shadow. They teleported back to Tempest. Well, not exactly Tempest, but as close as they could get. Rimuru used his abilities to pass through the barriers and find out exactly what happened there. He found Benimaru trying to apprehend Mjurran but Youm and Grucius were protecting her. Once Rimuru arrived she showed him what had happened there, no doubt expecting to feel the force of his wraith. To make matters worse, the army of Falmuth was going to return in one week!
Episode 32 – Hope
Rimuru is taken to see the wounded and put Hakurou and Gobta to rights with his predator skill. They have a bit of a laugh when Gobta accidentally calls Hakurou old man, which makes Rimuru joke that Shion has gone off on a revenge mission as he hasn’t seen her. Benimaru asks Rimuru to follow him. He leads him to the middle of the town square where he shows Rimuru Shion’s body. She was cut down by the knights as she protected a child. Gobta breaks down when he sees Gobzo’s body. He died protecting Shuna. Rimuru loses control for a moment and then asks to be left alone. He’s about to put his fallen citizens to rest inside his body when Ellen, Gido, and Kabaru arrive. Ellen has a fairy tale she wants to tell Rimuru. One that may hold the key to resurrecting his friends.
Playing With Fire!
This is the moment that I’ve been waiting for. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has been a very calm and peaceful affair where Rimuru has been slowly building his nation. He defeats the wicked leader and integrates the survivors into his group. It’s worked so far so why would he expect anything different to happen. However, everything up to now has been working towards this point.
Maybe it was naive to believe that he could continue to make everyone happy, but it had worked over and over again. It almost became a little too formulaic. I’ve definitely seen that criticism made about the series. However, I think this shows that we’ve been watching the slow and steady build-up to what is going to be probably the defining moment of the series. When I look back, I think it’s been done very well, all be it a little slow at times.
The thing is everyone has been warning him, but Rimuru didn’t take them as seriously as he should have. He should have realised that by making trade agreements with these nations that he was going to upset someone and there’s no better way than to impact their revenue. The Kingdom of Falmuth is generally disliked, but they are ideally positioned to make them the only trade route.
Of course, Rimuru opened up the Forest of Juru as a viable route and then made a road so that it’s even easier to travel through. This has taken the thing that Falmuth depended on – their trade revenues and tariffs. Gazel Dwargo warned Rimuru and Mjollmile tried to warn him too. They may have not expected anything to happen so soon, but they saw it coming. Rimuru just assumed that everything would be fine, because why wouldn’t it?
This season has taken a good amount of time to reacquaint us with the core group of characters which I feel has been quite deliberate. I know this is a personal preference, but as soon as I didn’t see Shion when Rimuru returned to Tempest I began to worry. She is without a doubt my favourite character and this season alone we’ve seen her strength and her vulnerability. Even with the barriers up she was keeping up with Shougo. Then, when the knights charged, she ran towards them to save a child.
Sadly it cost her life. I was devastated by this scene as Rimuru walked through this town, blood splattered on the walls, bodies huddled together. They did a great job of showing us that this group of attackers are evil. Maybe they went too far and removed all ambiguity from the situation because as soon as they revealed there was a small chance that they could be revived, I was all in on the solution. Even when I heard what the cost was, I knew Rimuru would do it without hesitation.
He may have been playing with fire all this time, but the Kingdom of Falmuth was now doing that very same thing. They decided that the nation of Tempest would be easy pickings as they are all monsters. With the barriers in place, they had the edge. However, I found the way they bragged and attacked indiscriminately to be appalling and that has sealed their doom. They wanted to take Rimuru out of the equation, but now he’s mad.
He blames himself for the rules that he put in place, long before he had experienced everything this world has to offer. Had he taken a moment to think it through he would and should have realised that not everyone will be as welcoming and understanding. Anyhow, we now find ourselves in a position where Rimuru needs to kill ten-thousand humans in order to become a demon lord and save his friends. This is going to be amazing!
