Rimuru has a dream about trying to introduce sumo wrestling in an attempt to make it a national pastime. He’s also fed up with Shion and Shuna fighting over him, so he wants to make beanbag versions so everyone can have one!
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (OVA 1-2)
OVA 1 – Hey! Butts!
Rimuru informed Vesta that slimes never sleep, but he would very much like to be able to. Luckily, Vesta had something that would help. Rimuru tried the sleep pills and was instantly put into a deep sleep where he experienced a dream for the very first time in ages. In this dream, Rimuru realised that his nation needed a form of entertainment so he picked a sport for all to play. His choice – sumo wrestling.
However, the men’s division was dominated by Benimaru as he attempted to save his sister’s lap… The women’s division came to a head when Shion and Shuna faced off in the final. There was just one problem. The ring had been destroyed by Milim in the previous round. The only possible solution was for them to compete in Butt Sumo using the small remaining fragment of the ring… And that was how butt sumo took off as the Jura Tempest Federation’s national sport… Well, until Rimuru woke up and demanded that the sleep pills be locked away forever!
OVA 2 – The Tragedy of M?
Rimuru was tired of Shuna and Shion constantly fighting over who would get to hold him so he came up with the idea to create beanbags of himself that they could each care for. To do that he needed a stretchy material and set Shuna to complete that task. Now to find something to stuff it. Luckily, Garm knew of sand that was so fine it would work perfectly. However, it can only be found at one lake and it was home to a terrifying monster.
Rimuru decided to make an event of it and invited his closest allies on a picnic. That way he wouldn’t be alone if the monster was truly terrifying. He had Garm craft swimwear for the girls from the spandex material Shuna had acquired. He had not expected the guys to have swimwear too. They did… After a horrific Shion lunch, they swam to the sandbank but were attacked by a monster. However, it was just lonely and in pain from eating Shion’s rice ball. Rimuru healed it and promised to return often. It turned out that the sand was created by the monster’s digestive enzymes, which had also eaten through all the swimwear!
Something for Everyone!
Before diving into season two of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime I thought it would be best to watch all the OVAs to make sure I didn’t miss any details that might become important. Often OVAs and movies exist outside the main story, but sometimes they don’t. It’s best to just watch them and see what happens. Of course, I am pleased to report that these two OVAs fall into the must-watch category.
I don’t think they have any bearing on the overall story, but they were hilarious. In the first OVA, Hey! Butts! Rimuru tried to explain the rules to sumo, but since they were all monsters a lot of the rules needed to be changed to accommodate everyone. Obviously, the women’s tournament was the highlight, especially as Benimaru destroyed all the men in seconds. The reaction of Rimuru and everyone else to the girl’s mawashi was amazing. The icing on the cake was the way butt sumo took off, eclipsing regular sumo!
The second OVA, The Tragedy of M? was another great episode and one that was purely for fun. I laughed all the way through this one. Even more so than the sumo wrestling one. The sheer terror that everyone faces when confronted with Shion’s cooking is fantastic. It’s amazing just how far people will go to get away from her food.
One thing I enjoyed in season one was seeing the transformation of Rigurd. He started as a frail old goblin and once he received his name, he became this muscular monster. The way he would be flexing and posing all the time was hilarious. So, in this episode when everyone lost their swimwear, it was outrageous seeing all the guys in their bodybuilding poses. As I said, there’s something for everyone, unless you’re looking for culinary anime… Sorry, Shion!
