BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 19) – Maxing Defense and Hunting for Crystals

What happened?

Maple and Sally were wondering what to do when Frederica came in and challenged Sally to a duel. She has her familiar to show off. Sally agrees and races into the fight before Frederica can even show her familiar. She’s not about to take a chance that it would be something scary. After the rather quick duel, Maple and Sally go off on an adventure. Just the two of them. No plans. Sounds delightful!

After larping around with some sheep, they discover a crystal that says it’s one of three that open a door. Well, now they need to find the other two crystals and the door. Sally has a theory about where to look next and it works, revealing a map carved into a giant stone tablet that was hidden at the bottom of the sea. They take a picture of the map to Kanade who’s read about stuff like this. He gives them some pointers on where to go next.

At the first location, they find a giant bird similar to the one they defeated when they found Syrup and Oboro. Maple is keen to show off what she can do now. They quickly defeat it and move on to the next location. This time, there’s a giant floating rock monster waiting for them. It surprises them, but they quickly turn the tide with Maple in her ghost skin wielding a giant laser canon like a lightsaber… The final location reveals a hidden world with strange and unusual monsters. They find a glowing pool which Syrup and Oboro climb into. Seconds later they evolve. Well, this should come in handy in the event!

What did you think?

I feel like it’s been a while since we saw Sally and Maple just larping around and it was great. They used the same music as in the first season so it had a real nostalgic feel to it too. Of course, when Maple goofs around amazing things tend to happen and this was no exception. They make a great team. Maple stumbles on to great things and Sally has the strategic mind to take it further. It was just a great episode that does what this show does best. It was cute and fun. Even when they’re fighting these giant monsters there’s no room for panic as they quickly take control.

Based on what the developers were saying at the end of the episode it sounded like the players will become monsters in the next event. If that’s true, it should be pretty exciting. Who knows what Maple will become or how it will impact the other players as it’s a solo-player event. I do think that means they can’t team up, but I think the players turning into monsters might be their way of making that harder. We could get some interesting matchups. This should be a whole ton of fun!
