BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 9) – Defense and Fourth Event

The Guild Event is starting and everyone is working hard to prepare… well, except for Maple, Sally, May, and Yui who are at the beach! It’s going to be tough for Maple Tree, but then anything can happen with Maple around.

What happened?
Maple showed off a little of her new powers from defeating the Machine God and I think the rest of Maple Tree have reached the point where they aren’t even remotely shocked by anything Maple does now. Anyhow, the Guild Event is coming and everyone is busily trying to level up and find a way to give them an advantage. As a small guild, they don’t have the numbers to compete with the larger guilds over a lengthy period of time, but that’s not going to stop them from trying. Sally has a run-in with Frederica from the Order of the Holy Sword and successfully shows her some fake skills. Deception is going to be a big part of their strategy.

What was your favourite element?
I loved seeing Sally, Kasumi, and Kuromu going on the offensive to win some orbs in the Guild Event. It works like a standard flag capture game, but the flags return to their base after a time period. The guilds get points based on how many orbs they have for a certain period of time. So, you can’t just capture them and defend them for the rest of the game. You have to keep capturing them and with Sally, they could be in with a chance. She uses all of her skills and experience to swipe orbs by any means necessary, even stealing one out from beneath the nose of the leader of the Flame Emperors. Of course, then they have to defend the orbs, which should be a breeze with Maple protecting everyone.

What have you learnt?
I learnt that I’m really enjoying this series. They put a chat segment in the middle of the episode which is usually the final moment and I had to check the run time because it was way too soon and I couldn’t believe that it was already over. Thankfully, it wasn’t, but it was a moment of panic for sure. The real question is why am I enjoying it so much and how can I replicate that? Characters are a big part and the world is exciting too, but there’s got to be more to it than that. I think I’m really enjoying the way we’re watching this group get stronger and stronger. It’s a great mix of methods too as you have the more experienced players, doing it the usual way and then you have Maple doing her own thing. I like that May and Yui are following a similar path. Is that the answer? I’m not sure, but I’ll keep watching to see if I can find out.
