BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 1) – Defense and First Battle
Kaede has been convinced by her best friend to play a fully immersive game called NewWorld Online. She’s not much of a gamer but has a go anyway. While setting up her profile, she maxes out her vitality as she doesn’t want to get hurt!
BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 1) – Defense and First Battle
What happened?
Kaede went through the game setup alone and without any experience in gaming, she set her name as Maple and assigned all of her stats to vitality, selecting the great shield as her starting weapon. Desperate to not get hurt, it seemed like the right approach, but upon starting in the game Maple found out that she was slow and had no strength, but it’ll work out in the end. She headed off to find some monsters to defeat, but she has no attack strength so she became a punching bag for a violent bunny rabbit. However, none of its attacks hurt and after a while Maple received a new skill. The bunny eventually tired and died, leaving Maple with more skill points to assign, which she put into her vitality of course.
What was your favourite element?
At first glance, I was a little worried that this was a Cute Girls doing Cute Things show which isn’t one of my preferred genres, but so far, I’m loving it. I’m still not sure if it will end up that way or whether it’s just going to be an action-comedy, either way, if it stays like this I’ll be fine. I really enjoyed watching Maple overcome her skill point allocation snafu. It was hilarious watching her take it all in her stride and amazingly continue to grow beyond what anyone else would have achieved with a more balanced skillset. She’s set herself up to become an indestructible hero and I’m loving her innocent and naive approach to the game.
What have you learnt?
Considering that my preferred genre is dark fantasy, it’s probably surprising to see me enjoying this so much. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you can never vary your chosen genres enough. There’s always something to learn. In this episode, I’m finding Maple’s character to be a breath of fresh air. Seeing someone with no experience or knowledge of gaming doing this well is delightful. I love how the game is rewarding her for her unconventional decisions. On the face of it, this could have just been another overpowered hero in an online fantasy world, but already it has found an interesting angle and it’s going to be great when the other characters start to see what she’s doing.

Silly and charming… What more can you ask for?
It was lots of fun and I am looking forward to seeing just how strong Maple can get. One of my early favourites for the season!
So it sounds like a lighthearted version of Shield Hero meets Sword Art Online. Is that right?
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. It’s definitely worth watching and I say that as someone that’s not a fan of the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things genre.
Interesting.
