BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 16) – Maxing Defense and Tower Conquest

BOFURI Title

It’s looking like a three-way race to the top of the tower between Payne, Mii, and Maple. Who will get there first and how will Sally cope with a haunted floor? Could this be the greatest event in the game’s history?

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 16) – Maxing Defense and Tower Conquest

What happened?

On the fourth floor, Maple and Sally found a giant turtle. It’s probably the boss, but Maple wants to ride on its back for a while first. Sally agrees, but she’s getting a little impatient. Eventually, Maple gives in and they quickly destroy it and move on. The fifth floor, however, is horror-themed. We get to see the rest of Maple Tree tackling it first where Kasumi shows off a new ability – [Arms of the Warrior]. Everyone is concerned with how Sally with cope with the level, but no one could have guessed she would hide in Maple’s mouth in her [Atrocity] form.

Payne and the Holy Sword guild battled through the sixth floor. with relative ease and then Mii and the Flame Emperors destroyed the monster on the seventh floor. Maple and Sally were right behind them. On the eighth floor, the body was a chameleon that puts the players to sleep with its tongue attack. Maple slept through the whole fight but did prove a distraction for the boss so Sally could defeat it with ease. The ninth floor featured a giant cylindrical machine boss that could mimic every attack. Maple used [Machine God] to become a giant drill and pulverised it.

The tenth floor had a cursed knight that was powerful and fast. Maple and Sally had to use every single one of their abilities to bring it down and even then there were several times it looked like they wouldn’t do it. Eventually, they did defeat it and were the third team to complete the tower behind Payne and Mii, respectively.

So, this was epic. It had a great mix of goofing around and tackling the increasingly difficult bosses. I’m glad we saw some of the other teams and that the developers weren’t just watching Maple and Sally. It was just fantastic. When it had to go hard it went so hard. The music was outstanding and really amped the atmosphere in each of the fights. Part of me wishes we could have seen all of the boss fights from the top three teams, but that might be asking a bit much. I loved how Sally and Maple fought together using everything we’ve seen them work on before now. It all made sense.

It was also nice to see the developers acknowledge that they aren’t trying to make an unbeatable game. They want people to beat it. Sure, Maple is an oddity, but she’s not the number one player and her guild isn’t the number one guild. It shows that a new player could come in and acquire a raft of bizarre skills and abilities and rise up. That’s what you need from a developer’s point of view. If the top players can’t be touched, there’s no point in anyone new joining the game. I can’t believe it’s only been four episodes. This would have been an outstanding end-of-season episode. The real end-of-season episode must be unbelievable!
