BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Episode 20) – Maxing Defense and the Eighth Event

What happened?

The Eighth Event is split into two parts. The first is a solo-player game where you get points for staying alive and killing monsters. Having a friendly monster will no doubt come in handy. Maple finds herself almost instantly confronted by a giant lizard. After a moment of panic, she paralyzes it and then devours it with her shield. One extra bit of information about this part of the event is that every monster kill comes with a status update. After Maple’s last kill, all monsters now flee from her as soon as they see her and she’s not fast enough to keep up.

Maple being Maple stumbles upon a plant that attracts monsters and it seems to override her current status. She quickly destroys everything coming her way and then activates the trap again and again and again. Her new status update has put her location on the map and everyone is keen to have a chance to be the one that defeated Maple. They really should know better by now. May and Yui arrive to help Maple but leave when they see what she’s up to.

Meanwhile, Sally has been racing around the map, taking in the sights and preparing for the future. Then, she stumbles upon Payne and Mii who are about to have a fight. This’ll be worth watching. Maybe, she can work out a way to defeat both of them. After several overpowered blows have been exchanged, the fight is abruptly interrupted by a giant crocodile holding a giant ball of wool in its mouth while firing lasers from said ball. Maple larping around has changed the mood, leaving Payne and Mii unwilling to continue their fight. All of Maple Tree qualified for the hardest bracket of the second stage!

What did you think?

This episode started in a similar way to when Maple played the first event alone. I even feel like she was teleported to a similar location. Of course, she is still unstoppable and that first monster learnt it the hard way. I thought it was a clever move to have the monsters running away from Maple, but then to leave a plant lying around that attracted monsters was a massive oversight from the developers. I think my favourite moment might have been when May and Yui found Maple destroying something and decided to leave her to it.

Although, Maple riding around in that giant crocodile firing random laser blasts in any and every direction has to win the episode, especially because of the more serious moment Maple interrupted. I had to laugh that the developers made the crocodile without an inside so that Maple wouldn’t eat it from the inside out, but no one could have predicted her controlling it with her wool ball skill. Maple is so brilliantly unpredictable. It makes the series so entertaining.
