Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (OVA) – Is It Wrong to Expect a Hot Spring in a Dungeon?
What happened?
Hestia was determined to get some alone time with Bell, but there was never a good moment, and now that the dungeon was aware of Hestia and Hermes presence, they decided to head back to the surface. They also needed some recovery time after fighting the boss on the safe level. On their way, they were attacked by some monsters, although Bell quickly took care of them. Annoyed at Liliruca constantly fawning over Bell, Hestia kicked a stone and discovered an unmapped area of the dungeon.
Before anyone could think things through, Mikoto rushed inside in a mad panic. It turned out that the area was actually a hot spring. They were keen to use it, however, the presence of Hermes made that impossible. Luckily, he had planned for this occasion and unveiled a collection of swimwear that he had put under Asufi’s cloak. So, with that taken care of, they all got in the water.
However, Hestia still couldn’t get Bell alone. Well, that was until she discovered an area deeper inside the cave. She stumbled upon something else and the water changed. It quickly dissolved everyone’s swimwear and sent them racing from the hot spring. Bell and Hestia, however, were attacked by giant angler fish. Ryuu Lion saved them at the last second, but that just awakened the boss!
What did you think?
With the new anime season about to start, I needed some posts to fill this week’s schedule. Luckily, I recently bought an annual subscription to HiDive for half price and found a number of shows that aren’t available on my other platforms. Anyhow, back to this OVA. It was hilarious. I’ve missed all these characters since the third season ended so it was nice to jump back in just after the end of the first season which remains my favourite of the three.
I’m also a big fan of hot spring episodes in general so this was already off to a great start. Then, when you threw in the crazy antics as the guys, Hermes excluded, tried to keep their composure as the girls frolicked in the water around them. In fact, it was a lot of the more subtle moments that really made me laugh. I’m sure most were watching Mikoto’s bizarre hot spring ritual and may have missed the reaction of everyone else behind her. It was a fairly low stakes episode, but it was fun.
What have you learnt?
So, what can you possibly learn from an OVA in terms of writing? I’m glad you asked. One of the most widely acknowledged methods for sustaining an independent author business is the mailing list. Ask anyone successful and they will tell you to double down on building one. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Well, this is where the OVAs come in, maybe even a prequel.
Because most OVAs exist within the story world but have little to no impact on the state of the story, you can make these mini side stories that give the readers another chance to spend time with the characters that they love. It’s not uncommon for authors to give these away as a bonus for joining their mailing list. It’s a nice way to thank the fans for allowing you to send them promotional information and you can expand the world a little. If you’re writing a series of books, you should start thinking about how to get the most out of it and I’m going to recommend some OVAs… or short stories that tie in with the series.
