Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs (Volume 23) – For the Days We Would Spend Together…
What happened?
Matora and Nonko power up and charge into battle against the demon that was once Jonosuke. He’s been tampering with forbidden arts so much that he’s lost control of Kogarashi’s body. Ryuzen showed up after Kogarashi disappeared and offered the girls a chance to save him. She put them all into a dream-like state where they would see how their future with Kogarashi would pan out. Each of them needed to make a connection to him that would power up a real-world transformation. Eventually, they would have enough power to bring him back. However, the demon was incredibly powerful, taking care of Nonko and Matora.
Nakai used her luck manipulation to save the nearby area from falling debris, but she couldn’t do that indefinitely. Luckily, Tenko Nadare appeared and moved Yuragi-sou along with the demon to another dimension. It also meant the demon couldn’t use the leylines to power itself up. However, that just meant it needed to find another source. Koyuzu and Miria used the superhero talisman to become powerful warriors and join the fight. However, the demon used tentacles to absorb their mana – its new power source.
Nadare was not done yet. He had another trick to play, summoning Ryuuga Genshiro and Yoinozaka Shakuhito to join the fight. They were amped up and ready to join in, however, they too succumbed to the power of the tentacles in a matter of seconds. It looks like it’s down to the girls and their dreams of the future. Sagiri and Hibari both made progress in their dreams eventually, kissing Kogarashi and creating a connection. In Oboro’s dream, they were trapped in God Speed. Their only hope was for their mana to be depleted, but that would mean that Kogarashi would be powerless. It would take him thousands of years to recover. She offered to kill herself, which would end God Speed. He stopped her and then kissed her, realising that he’d liked her all along. Another connection was made.
Chisaki’s dream sent her into the future, but not as far as last time. However, she knew it was a dream and refused to do anything that would hurt Kogarashi. In this dream, he visited Ryuzen and learned of the future Chisaki saw. He bought the engagement ring that they selected in the future and proposed to her. Hiogi discovered that she could ensure that she would end up with Kogarashi in the real world by summoning alien yokai to Earth. They would fight and become one. However, she realised that she was being too overbearing and controlling. She apologised to Kogarashi who kissed her. Just one more connection to go.
Yuuna’s dream was the future that Chisaki saw and averted by stopping Shakuhito from sealing away Kogarashi’s spirit energy. In it, he could no longer see or hear Yuuna. However, they continued to spend time together, communicating as best they could. Even with these restrictions, their love blossomed and the final connection was made. However, Ryuzen needed one more thing. Yuuna needed to remember everything. Her dream changed to a memory – the memory of her final month alive. Ryuzen had shown her a future where she would be with the one who loved her back, but it was only after she had died. The thing keeping Yuuna in this realm was Kogarashi!
What did you think?
We continued to see the girls’ idealised futures with Kogarashi which was heartwarming but also incredibly sad. It was clear that the only way he ended up with any of the girls other than Yuuna was because she had passed on. Of course, we also learned that the reason that Yuuna hadn’t passed on was because of the vision Ryuzen had shown her of her afterlife with Kogarashi. Now that she knows that and has experienced it does that mean she will pass on? That’s going to be a bittersweet way of setting up one of the other girls to end up with him. Now, I’ve been team Chisaki for a while now, but also don’t want it to go that way. I also don’t want the other girls to be sad. This is going to be a tough series to finish.
The fight with the demon, however, was a lot of fun. Seeing Nonko and Matora fighting together is always a treat, but I never expected Koyuzu and Miria to become buff heroes and join the fight. That was unexpected and absolutely hilarious. Almost as funny as Genshiro and Shakuhito being completely ineffective when they joined the fight. The only other person who could swoop in for the final volume to add some much-needed muscle is Kogarashi’s sensei, Ouga Makyouin. I really hope that happens. I’m also not sure how I’m going to handle the ending after twenty-four volumes. I’ve been reading this series since January and now I’m about to start the last book in the series.
