How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Ω (Episode 14) – Head Paladin
What happened?
Diablo, Shera, and Rem accompanied Lumachina to Zircon Tower where she believed she would find the head paladin, Batutta. She hoped that he would protect her and help to overthrow the evil cardinals that have taken over the church. To get there that had to cross the great sea of sand, something that Rem didn’t particularly enjoy.
Not long after arriving, they realised that the place was in a rough condition. People seemed to be sick and suspicious of outsiders. Then Diablo bumped into an adventurer called Horn who told him about a new dungeon that had arrived. It sounded just like the one that Diablo created in the game of Cross Reverie before being summoned here.
His excitement was short-lived, however, as Lumachina managed to get involved with the locals. She was busy chastising a member of the paladin brigade for his rough treatment of a woman and a child. He threatened to discipline her, but then Diablo swept in and blew him away.
It turned out that the child had a rare condition and without the healing miracle of a priest it was sure to die. However, there are lots of people with the same condition and only those that can make a suitable donation to the church can be seen in a timely manner. This didn’t sit well with Lumachina who turned to Diablo for help. He told her that he believed she could do it, so she knelt beside the child and prayed.
Miraculously, the child was healed. Of course, there was no time to celebrate as a ship was racing toward Zircon Tower with a Sand Whale in tow. It planned to use the city as a way to escape from the massive creature, but that would be catastrophic for everyone there. Diablo raced to the port and prepared a massive spell in an attempt to destroy it.
As his spell worked, another attack was launched from afar and then another. Diablo was curious to see who was strong enough to perform attacks like that. Luckily, he didn’t have to wait long as the first arrived – head paladin Batutta. He recognised Lumachina and then tried to protect her when the other attacker showed herself – the town ruler, Fanis Laminitus. She was interested in the person that cast the spell. However, Batutta told her he had gone.
Batutta took them back to his house where they were fed and bathed. Meanwhile, Lumachina asked to speak with Batutta.
What did you think?
I feel like a lot of the things that I liked about the first season have been left out. For example, the idea of Diablo being insanely powerful and able to overcome pretty much anything without much concern was great. I enjoyed the reactions from others and also his reaction. However, he seems to have become less sure of himself since then.
I also don’t like how Shera and Rem have been used. They basically don’t even need to be in it so far other than to wash Diablo’s back. I feel like this is a huge error. Both were integral to the first season and as they were the ones that summoned Diablo, that made sense. They seem to be like cheerleaders now rather than actual adventurers.
What have you learnt?
I’m fairly concerned with how this season is going to go, especially after my recent experience with season two of The Promised Neverland. I’m sure things will turn around, but so far, I’ve been less than impressed with this season. The characters don’t act as they did in the first season and the plot seems fairly obvious so far.
Where is the real Diablo? Last season, he defeated an unbeatable creature capable of ending the world, beat an army of Fallen singlehandedly, and then took down the demon lord, Krebskulm. This season, a large Sand Whale caused him to panic. I’m a strong believer that characters are one of the most important aspects of a story. So, when those characters that you’ve identified with start acting differently, it can really disrupt your enjoyment.
