What happened?

After witnessing Diablo flying in the sky with an altar, Fanis decided to go after him and ask him who he was and what he was up to. Her recent incident with the demon lord’s general was no doubt fresh in her mind. So, when Diablo admitted that he was a demon lord from another world, she ordered her troops to open fire. Diablo cast a spell that made the ground shake, allowing them to run away.

Horn led the group to the new dungeon although it took them several days to find it. Diablo was excited to see his old dungeon in this new world. The only problem was he couldn’t tell the others that it was his dungeon, so he had to make it seem like he didn’t know the way to beat everything.

The others were a little worried and asked Diablo for some sort of reassurance. He’s not too good at stuff like that and his attempts to hide it just made it worse. Anyhow, they pushed on and started to move beyond the various challenges.

One challenge had them suspended above a lava pit. Each member of the party had to take turns answering a question. Get enough right and you can advance. Answer incorrectly and plummet to your doom. As you might expect, it got pretty hot, which just made Diablo even more nervous.

After that challenge, they arrived at a very strange room. A group of monster apes sat waiting for something. They were waiting for an idol performance and Diablo and the others wanted to continue, they would have to perform…

Needless to say, they blew the monster apes away who instantly demanded an encore. That’s not going to happen, but it made them happy. In the next area, they were busy walking along a narrow ledge, high above a raging river when they were attacked by a flying worm. This was not part of the dungeon…

Then another worm appeared, separating Lumachina and Horn from the others. That was when the paladin that was tracking Lumachina showed up and prepared to kill her. Horn dived at him, sending them both falling into the river below. Diablo dived in after Horn.

What did you think?

This could have been a lot of fun. The dungeon should have been a highlight with weird and crazy monsters to defeat. However, it was all a little silly. Of course, the girls picked up on that, but that still doesn’t make it any more enjoyable. The idol scene was probably the strangest addition to the series so far.

The weirdest thing, however, was the paladin showing up after the idol challenge. Did that mean that he too performed well enough to continue? I’m sure no one thought of that though. I really wanted to enjoy this and the more I see the more frustrated I’m getting. It’s so far removed from the first season.

What have you learnt?

I’d be happy with more Fanis. She seems to be fairly interesting and not nearly as one dimensional as Lumachina. I’m still not a big fan of how Shera and Rem have changed since the first season or the way they’re being used in the story. I guess that’s one of the tricky things with sequels. You can often tell when the original idea ran out and now they’re just trying to tac things on.

I thought the first season ended quite well with the defeat of Krebskulm. Diablo had his harem and I was fine with that. Would have liked more adventures with Shera and Rem? Of course, but they needed to be central to the story and not relegated to side characters. So far, this isn’t really working for me and that’s painful to say.
