Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 11) – To You
Ariel is worried that Fitz’s inability to reveal herself to Rudeus is causing her more trouble than it’s worth so she gives Fitz an ultimatum – tell Rudeus who she really is or forget about him forever!
Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 11) – To You
What did you watch?
I’ve been playing a bit of catchup with Mushoku Tensei and with this episode, I am finally all caught up… just in time for the season two part one finale. We’ve had our differences over several of the last five or six episodes, but I still hope it finishes strong. Overall, I love this story and am committed to watching it to the end no matter how long that takes. So, with that out of the way let’s find out what happened in this episode.
What happened?
Luke confronted Rudeus about Fitz, but Rudeus denied that he knew anything and said that even if he did, he had no intentions of revealing anything to anyone. His fear for Luke and the fact that he has no connections to the Boreas or Notos families should be enough for him to believe him. Before he could say anything, Rudeus ran away. Later, Princess Ariel confronted Fitz about Rudeus approaching her in the market and rumours of Fitz yelling I’m a man in the library were compromising her security. She told Fitz to make a decision. What did she really want?
Fitz wanted to be with Rudeus, however, she was terrified that Rudeus had forgotten who she was. In an attempt to help, Ariel asked Fitz to tell her about some of her favourite memories of Rudeus. They were the time he saved her from bullies and the time he removed her panties because he thought she was a boy. Haha. Good times! Anyhow, from those delights, Princess Ariel came up with a plan. Fitz would ask Rudeus to accompany her on a quest to get a flower. There, she would ensure that they got wet and he had to undress her. That was sure to remind him who she was.
Everything was going perfectly to plan. Fitz used magic to create a raincloud and then used Rudeus’ staff to keep it there when he tried to clear it up. They rushed for cover and found a small cave. Rudeus made a fire and dried his clothes. He offered to create a separate room for Fitz, but she was too cold. She looked at him and said, “I might die unless you remove my clothes.” So, he did, however, when he removed her glasses it all became clear. He asked her if her real name was Sylphiette.
What did you think?
I might die unless you remove my clothes. That line is up there with “You had me at hello”, “As you wish.”, and “I know.” as one of the greatest romantic quotes of all time, and may well be my favourite of the bunch. It was a relief to see Syphiette finally reveal herself to Rudeus… However, all the credit has to go to Princess Ariel for lighting the fire beneath Fitz’s feet and forcing her to act. There were subtle hints to some of the previous episodes such as Fitz laughing to herself about buying Rudeus with money. Anyhow, this was a great episode because it finally got these two together. It’s going to be interesting to see how things progress from here, especially as there is only one episode before the midseason break!
What was your favourite moment?
The image of Fitz hiding behind Rudeus with his staff casting spells to counter his spells to eradicate the weather she just produced using spells was pretty funny. It’s almost up there with Rudeus’ attempts to bring Soldat into the mission or buy the flower. He was missing those hints left, right, and centre. It’s a wonder he even recognised her without her glasses on. Sometimes, he can be so astute, but other times he is on a planet of his own. Still, it has to be the moment that he recognised her and the relief she showed afterwards.
Who was the most impactful character?
It has to be Princess Ariel. She has no doubt won a willing ally in Fitz for life and Rudeus along with her. That will no doubt aid her bid to usurp her brother. It does make me wonder if that had been her plan all along, but regardless, she told Syphiette to follow her dreams. She was Ariel’s friend and not her servant. She needed to do what she wanted. Even then, Sylphiette could commit until Ariel gave her an ultimatum. Well done, Ariel. It’s about time those two got together.
Was there any conflict?
The main conflict was centred around whether Rudeus would recognise her or not, which is why we had the dubious setup and resulting scenario that was designed to jog his memory. Even given how clueless he can be from time to time, I think he would have recognised her without the charade, but then we would have never heard that immortal line – I might die unless you remove my clothes. If you’re not with someone that would be prepared to do that then you need to find someone new… or else, you might die!
What have you learnt?
Whilst I am glad that we’ve finally resolved the issue of Rudeus recognising Sylphiette, I can’t help but feel like things could have been done a little quicker and then we would have been able to enjoy them being together… romantically. The constant games have been a little infuriating and allowed for several of those other less-than-savoury scenarios to play out. I will concede that the payoff was good and sometimes waiting for it makes it that much better, but in this instance, I’m not too sure. Maybe, I just want to see them together more as an actual couple instead of bros!
