Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 8) – Turning Point 1
What happened?
So, Rudeus caught Eris and Ghislaine planning his tenth birthday party. Rather than ruin the surprise, he decided to see what he could get away with. Once the day came, Ghislaine was tasked with keeping Rudeus busy while the final preparations were completed. He worked it out and decided to show her a figurine of her he’d been working on. Only he could work out how her tail connected to her body and asked if he might see it! She didn’t even hesitate, turning around and dropping her pants.
A maid arrived while this was going on to let them know the dinner was ready and was not prepared for the sight that greeted her. At the surprise birthday party, Rudeus managed to get Sauros to declare that he would remove the head of the Notos branch of Greyrats and have Rudeus made the family head. Philip’s wife even embraced Rudeus and offered to adopt him, no, she demanded that he marry her daughter Eris. Things got out of hand!
Meanwhile, the strange object in the sky started to gather mana and caught the attention of eyes all across the lands. Rudeus was about to show Ghislaine and Eris his most powerful spell, but they were attacked by someone from the sky. Ghislaine fought him off, but then the object erupted, catching everyone in the explosion!

What did you think?
Amazing! This was a great episode. It started off as normal with Rudeus wandering around the manor. I liked how he saw what was going on and decided to see what he could get away with. His performance at the party was hilarious and I loved that they had to drag two family members out for getting too passionate about things that you shouldn’t decide on a whim.
The scene with Rudeus and Eris in his bedroom was quite awkward and I’m glad it didn’t go any further. That said, I feel like they are getting closer as characters and that was quite well done, especially considering how they reacted when they first met. However, Ghislaine does it again. She is absolutely fearless. Literally, nothing fazes her!

What have you learnt?
Well, this episode ended with a bang! This is where the adventure really begins. Everything up to now has been about setting the stage. I love this series and I can’t wait for the next part, especially with season two only days away. This series took its time to set the stage and introduce the players. Often that would be considered too slow for modern audiences. It worked with Lord of the Rings and as a result, this feels like a homage to the fantasy stories of old.
The best thing about this is that either way can work. Mushoku Tensei took a more considered approach whereas Goblin Slayer threw us into the deep-end and left us to sink or swim. There’s no right way to do things, despite what some people will tell you. The best thing you can do is experiment and see what works. I feel like I now need to look into the light novels to get an idea of how this was developed in the book. Basically, this story is fascinating and I can’t get enough.
