Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 14) – No Such Thing As a Free Lunch
Rudeus is enjoying the finest rent-free accommodation in the heart of the beast people’s domain. He’s got free food, a bed, a toilet, and all the name-calling and abuse he could ask for… Being a prisoner isn’t what he expected!

What happened?
Stripped of his clothes, his staff, and his dignity, Rudeus could get used to this… Well, that’s a concern anyhow! The reality of the matter is that the beast people will not hear him out and have already decided that he was guilty. After five days of this, he is joined by another. His name is Geese and he’s been caught cheating at dice.
Luckily, Rudeus has been in there longer and that makes him the boss! Of course, Rudeus could break out at any time he wants, but he also doesn’t want to get lost in the forest so he asks Geese to help him. However, Geese is ironically not a gambling man!
Just when Rudeus can’t take anymore and is about to break out, he notices that the guard isn’t there. It’s oddly hotter too and a little smokey! That’s when they realise that the village is burning and decide to escape. As they run for freedom, they notice humans killing beast people and capturing their children. Can he run knowing that he did nothing to stop them?
No! Rudeus uses his Saint-level water magic to put out the fire and give the beast people an advantage. He then goes with the warriors to rescue the rest of the children. They’ve almost freed them all when Gallus Cleaner shows up and asks Rudeus to join him. It had all been a part of his plan to use Dead End to distract the beast people’s warriors so he could take even more. What will Rudeus do when faced with a Saint-level North Sword!
What did you think?
Well, it was yet another fantastic episode. Excuse the pun, but this one was on fire! I had to laugh at Rudeus in his apartment cell doing his pitch for a would-be real estate show. However, the funniest moment was when Geese was thrown in the cell with him and then remarked that Rudeus was oddly confident for a naked guy!
Of course, the best part of the episode was seeing Rudeus finally stepping up and taking control of things. He’s had a few chances to do so and each time he’s been let off or failed to act, so this was the much-needed progression in his character development. He didn’t do it alone, but then gathering others around him seems to be another skill that he’s using quite successfully. I wonder if Geese will become a regular? I hope so, he was fun.

So, Gallus Cleaner was behind everything. Who could have seen that coming? If only someone had predicted it…
This new guy, Gallus Cleaner is either going to be a lot of trouble or the smuggler that they are looking for. Who am I kidding? He could just as easily be both.

Even so, that didn’t make it any less satisfying and the fact that he was actually a very powerful warrior made the fight that much better. Even with Rudeus’ foresight, he couldn’t do anything to do dodge the knife. However, he could see what Geese and the Sacred Beast were going to do, allowing him to be ready with his fireball as soon as needed. It was great to see this new ability used in a real setting and also seeing its limitations. Maybe Rudeus will be able to see further into the future the more proficient he becomes with it. Anyhow, I was right and this show is amazing.

Ok, the scene with him lying there in the cage, naked and posing for the new prisoner, was funny. There’s also the total lack of self-consciousness with which naked Rudeus interacted with the female guard. He even later commented that he had to be careful or he’d develop a new kink.
Contrast this with the great trauma of his life, being stripped, tied up to a fence, and humiliated. That experience destroyed his chance at a non-hikikimori life and drove much of his earlier behavior. I think he has put his trauma behind him and is enjoying his new freedom.
The oddest thing is that they kept his clothing – and especially his staff – right there near the entrance to his cell. You’d think that an item of great value and magical power would be kept in a safe place, far away from the one who could use it.
I’d not considered how it mirrored his past experiences and how differently he was handling it. It shows that he’s finally put it behind him. It was a funny scene for sure.
Little by little he’s growing and becoming a better person. He’s still got a long way to go, but this feels like a more natural progression. Would have been boring if he turned his life around overnight.
