Eris has some free time while Rudeus is writing a letter to his family, so she decides to go goblin hunting. At the guild house, she meets an annoying wizard and ends up letting him tag along. Those goblins are in trouble!
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Episode 24) – Eris the Goblin Slayer
What did you watch?
It’s been a while since I finished watching season one of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. A long while! It was actually towards the end of December 2021… Wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long. Anyhow, not long after it finished, they released this bonus episode called Eris the Goblin Slayer. Now, Goblin Slayer is also one of my favourite series so this screamed watch me. It did that over and over again, but I mustn’t have been paying attention. Well, I’ve corrected that now so let’s see what happened.
Eris was wandering the streets of Millis, taking in the sights. She saw demons being extorted and mistreated, she saw vendors selling tasty-looking food, and she found the adventurers’ guild. Inside, she asked about a quest to kill goblins and was delighted to see that it was still available. After standing up for some young mage, she soon left having beaten the same mage for calling her ugly. Surprisingly, he followed her and somehow convinced her to let him join her on her quest. Eris soon regretted it when Cliff used a powerful fire attack and burnt the goblins to ashes. Eris was furious as she needed to keep the left ear to claim her reward.
Cliff managed to convince Eris to enter the forest with him in search of more goblins, but they soon got lost. Then, Eris heard the sound of fighting and stumbled upon some masked men attacking a Temple Knight and a young girl. Eris shot into action and slaughtered the attackers although one escaped. The Temple Knight thanked Eris and showed them the way back to town as thanks. For some reason, Cliff hid his face under a helmet, although Eris didn’t really care to ask why. Back at the clearing in the forest, Ruijerd asked one of the men why they were trying to kill a child. She could be the next Pope and she wants to exterminate demons. What will Ruijerd do?
What did you think?
After a long break from Mushoku Tensei, I have been able to conclude one thing – I have really missed this show. It was like stepping right back into the world and instantly becoming reacquainted with old friends. I love this series. It is without a doubt in the top tier of Isekai stories. This side story actually takes place at the same time as episode 16 where Rudeus finds his father. I had no idea and was expecting it to continue after the end of episode 23. Either way, it was great. I love how strong and determined Eris is. She’s also an absolutely fearless fighter who doesn’t hold back one bit. There were some other notable things in this episode that I believe will become important in the grand scheme of things.
What was your favourite moment?
Eris and Cliff found the masked men attacking the Temple Knight. He wanted them to hide, but Eris told him that the masked men already knew they were there. Then, without hesitation, she told Cliff to stay put as she ran into battle. She was outnumbered and knew nothing of her opponents, but that didn’t stop her. Nothing could have stopped her. Eris sliced the first man clean in two and made quick work of the others. She was disappointed that she let one get away, but she saved the child so that’s all that mattered. Eris is incredible.
Who was the most impactful character?
Now, this episode was all about Eris so you would think that she would be the obvious choice, but I think that was a deliberate red-herring. The episode opened with a short storyboard of a boy being orphaned when his parents were killed and then being found by a nobleman. They discovered his affinity for magic and trained him to be a powerful mage. That was obviously all about Cliff. However, I don’t think it ends there. He clearly likes Eris and since she kept talking about Rudeus, Cliff now hates him even though he’s never met him. I think Cliff will become a major rival for Rudeus at some point in the future.
Was there any conflict?
There was loads of conflict. Of course, there was the obvious stuff such as Eris fighting goblins, Eris fighting masked men, and Eris beating up Cliff. Eris generally fighting anything she can. However, the main conflict for me was when Ruijerd questioned the dying masked man. After what happened in Ruijerd’s past, he’s got a thing for not hurting children. So, when he was told that the girl was likely to become the next pope and would probably insight genocide against the demons, he must have found himself conflicted. Can he sit back and allow that to happen? What if it doesn’t go the way he planned? I know Ruijerd left after getting Rudeus home, but I doubt he’s heading straight back to the demon continent. I think Ruijerd has another quest ahead of him and it’s going to push him to his limits.
What have you learnt?
One thing that I loved about this bonus episode was that it filled in a gap from the original episode. Rudeus was planning on writing a letter so the others could do as they wished for the day. I remember Eris saying she was going goblin slaying. I also remember thinking it was a shame we didn’t see any of it, but now I don’t have to worry about that. Stuff like this works incredibly well as bonus material that helps to flesh out the world and give the fans a little bit more. Had they squeezed this into the series when it happened, it would have taken valuable time away from Rudeus’ reunion with his father, Paul. Taking it out of the series and adding it as an extra episode works as a bonus and as a way to seed future events. Cliff could have easily been forgotten after the way season one ended. I think he’ll stand out more now.
