The rainy season has begun, stranding Rudeus and his party at Doldia Village, home of the beast-people. With some time to kill, Eris decides to teach some of the girls the human language and how to use a sword!

What happened?
The rain came flooding the forest making it unsafe for Rudeus, Eris, and Ruijerd to leave. So, with nothing else to do, they took to life in Doldia Village. Rudeus spent most of his time with the Sacred Beast which appeared to have become quite taken with him. Eris showed her new friends her sword skills and even taught them some of the human language. She’s grown so much since Rudeus first came into her life.
One evening, Gyes, the warrior that first imprisoned Rudeus noticed a Doldia ring on Eris’ finger and wondered where she got it. She told him it was a present from Ghislaine. With the mention of her name, the room went cold. Gyes couldn’t believe that she was still alive or that she even made anything of herself.
Eris defended Ghislaine ferociously, but Rudeus told her to let it go as the Ghislaine they know is not the Ghislaine the village remembers. Later that evening, Tona and Tersena went to see Eris and asked to learn more about Ghislaine. Eris told them that she learnt how to use a sword from her and in truth, she was not a great student, to begin with. Tona asked Eris to teach her to use the sword like Ghislaine.
Gyes watched his daughter practising with the sword and commented to Rudeus that he’d been trying to teach her for ages, but she’d resisted. He also asked about Ghislaine and was amazed to learn that she was the Sword King. Even more surprising was that Rudeus was teaching her magic, arithmetic, reading and writing. Gyes couldn’t believe it. Rudeus simply turned to him and said “people change.”
What did you think?
This was a slow and thoughtful episode, but also one of the most impactful. The character development was special and seeing the characters interact and grow has been one of the joys of this series. Say whatever you want of Rudeus, he has his bad moments and his great ones, but this series is on another level entirely in terms of world-building, writing, and characters. I really can’t get over how fantastic Mushoku Tensei is.
Now, I have a request for someone with more time than me. I love the opening montages which they have used to replace the standard OP animation segment and would like all of the openings cut together into one glorious video so that I can play it on loop and enjoy all the wonderful sights and sounds of this world. Not to mention the music. I really can’t praise this show enough and am looking forward to the next episode and the time when I can rewatch the entire thing.
What have you learnt?
People change! If that isn’t the entire message of this story boiled down into one line of dialogue I don’t know what is. Rudeus delivered it in such a calm and purposeful manner that I can’t imagine its meaning wasn’t lost on him either. We’ve seen Ruijerd trying to change the world’s view of his people. We’ve seen that he is not the man the rumours have created. Rudeus is on a massive journey of change. He’s not there yet, but as long as he keeps moving forward, I think he will get there.
However, this episode was all about Eris and her development. We were introduced to her ten episodes ago where she tried to beat Rudeus for daring to be her teacher. She was spoilt, bad-mannered, angry, violent, and short-tempered. The Eris we see now is practically a different person. She was able to teach Tona and Tersena how to speak in human language, she managed to interest Tona in sword fighting after taking her experiences and relating them to her. Then at the end when she sparred with Gyes, there was no tantrum when she lost. She accepted it with grace and looked forward to the next time. Her development has been staggering.

This is one of the few anime shows that I’ve been purposely making time for. I absolutely loved this episode.
