KonoSuba: God’s blessing on this wonderful world! (Episode 17) – Goodbye to This Irritating Living World!

After defeating Vanir, a lucrative opportunity appears for Kazuma thanks to Vanir II… On top of that, Kazuma gets some new equipment and is excited to test it out. Luckily, there’s a quest that appeals to them all.
What happened?
So, it would appear that demons are harder to kill than it would appear. Well, luckily for them, Vanir has no interest in working for the Devil King anymore and has started working at Wiz’s shop. He also has a proposition for Kazuma, aware that he is from another world. Vanir wants Kazuma to recreate items from his home and then give them to Vanir who will mass-produce and sell them. It’s a great idea, especially as Kazuma has the same one several episodes ago.
The first thing he recreates is a kotatsu which is ideal for the cold winter and as such, he is reluctant to come out from underneath it. Finally, after being thrown out of a second-floor window, he rejoins them to take on a new quest. But first, he goes to an armoury to collect a new weapon and a suit of armour. It looks pretty good on him, however, it’s too heavy for him to move in. Then, his sword is too long for him to be able to walk around.
Eventually, he has it shortened and then fails to notice when Megumin officially names it Chunchunmaru… The quest they have decided upon involves a rampaging pack of running lizards. However, Kazuma has a plan. He’s going to use Snipe to kill the queen and the king, forcing the pack to disperse. It was a good plan, but then Aqua tried to help…

Aqua managed to summon the entire pack to their location and since Kazuma had killed the king, they were extra wild as they vied to become the new king. Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin are swept away in the stampede, leaving Kazuma to Snipe the queen. Unfortunately, the queen spots him and leaps into the air to attack.
Kazuma manages to kill the queen, but her body lands in the tree he’s hiding in, forcing him to fall. There’s a wild pack of running lizards below, but it’s the fall that kills him. He finds himself back in the afterlife with Eris who he realises is the person he actually likes. Eris reveals that she occasionally sneaks down to the surface, but that’s between them.
Aqua finishes healing Kazuma, but he decides he would like to be reborn into Japan. Darkness and Megumin are not too happy about this, and Megumin even does something to his body, which makes him decide to go back to stop them. When he wakes, he sees a teary-eyed Megumin and a traumatized Darkness. Aqua refuses to say what happened. It’s not until they get back to the mansion and Kazuma goes for a bath that he discovers what happened!

What did you think?
The humour in this episode was more subtle than the previous episodes, but still very funny. Seeing Kazuma hiding under his kotatsu was funny, and of course, his actions while trying to stop Darkness and Megumin from getting him out was a factor later in the episode. However, the best part was when Kazuma was collecting his new sword and armour.
It was a fairly classic situation, but hilarious all the same. Of course, Kazuma couldn’t move in armour like that. However, it was the stuff with the sword that really stole the scene. He looked so confident, like a true hero now that he had his sword, but as he walked out of the shop, he knocked over everything and then struggled to get through the door. Ridiculous, but funny.

What have you learnt?
I think it was back in episode seven that I realised that I was jealous of Kazuma and found it frustrating that he didn’t really appreciate how good he had it. Sure, things were never easy, but he was living the dream. It was when he found himself before Eris that triggered it, so seeing him there once more and again thinking about going back to Japan made me think about that again.
Kazuma is a massive jerk. It’s true and I don’t think there’s any way to deny it, but that’s what is so funny and appealing about this series. He’s not the regular hero, but things have been working out for him, even if it’s not always obvious, to begin with. It just goes to show that characters don’t need to be liked to be fun. However, making Megumin cry wasn’t cool. Bad, Kazuma!

What is Aqua wearing?
In episode seventeen of Konosuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World!, Aqua found herself lying on the ground as a pack of wild running lizards raced towards her. Now, in a normal situation, I think this would have been the moment that the problem with Aqua’s attire would be solved. However, it wasn’t and that seems to point towards one specific answer, all be it without actually proving it one way or the other. Yeah, we’re not getting anywhere with this one…
