KonoSuba: God’s blessing on this wonderful world! (Season Two)

After defeating the mobile fortress, Kazuma was suspected of being a terrorist after part of it destroyed a noble’s mansion. Will he be able to convince everyone that he’s innocent or will he face the death penalty?
What did you watch?
Of all the shows I chose to revisit, KonoSuba was the only one with two seasons, OVAs, and a movie. I’ve now finished season two so it’s time to sum up how I felt about it. If you’ve been following the episode reviews, I think you’ll know exactly how I feel. It’s not something I’ve been careful to mask. At the end of the day, enjoyment is as important a factor as any when reviewing something. So, let’s just dive in and see if Kazuma has any more luck in this season than he did in the last. Also, there will be spoilers.

What happened?
He defeated one of the demon kill’s generals and beat the undefeatable Destroyer. It should be a time of celebration, however, Kazuma is now under suspicion of being a terrorist and working for the demon king. He had Wiz teleport the coronatite core of the Destroyer to a random location to save everyone. However, that location was the home of a local lord and he’s not too happy about it. Now, Kazuma will face trial and if he loses, his life will be forfeit.
He had almost got out of the trail too, but when asked if he had any connection to the demon king, he said no. The truth device wasn’t happy with that answer, whcich was when Kazuma remembered Wiz. She was a general in the demon king’s army and she may have just sealed his fate, unless he can get a fair trial, which he can’t. He’s almost proven his innocence, but the lord doesn’t care. Finally, Darkness reveals her true identity and makes a deal to save Kazuma.

What did you think?
This series is just fantastic. I have so much fun watching and re-watching it. There just always seems to be something else to laugh at. Whether it’s Kazuma’s sham trail, Darkness trying to break a marriage arrangement, or the Axis Cult. On top of that, when it’s time to get serious, the action scenes are spectacular. Just like the end of the first season, this one ends with a killer episode and fight scene. I’d like to think I’ve learnt a lot from rewatching KonoSuba. I just need to put it into practice now.

What was your favourite moment?
Just like with season one, this is a really hard one to pick. I think I’m going to go with Darkness trying to break the marriage proposal. That episode was insane. They had Kazuma and Aqua working as her faithful servants so that they could help her out, but Kazuma secretly hoped to marry her off and not have to deal with her in his party. This resulted in a constant back and forth between the two and ultimately made her suitor want to marry her more.
Eventually, it came down to a battle between Darkness and the potential husband. He was a far better fighter but Darkness could take everything he dished out. He gave up unable to keep hitting her. She mocked him and told him that Kazuma was an equal opportunity man and wouldn’t think twice about drop-kicking a girl. So, of course, Kazuma had to fight Darkness and it was hilarious, right down to her almost winning, until Kazuma made a bet that whoever loses has to do something the other person wants, and he claimed that his demands would be the most depraved thing imaginable…

What was your least favourite moment?
I feel really sorry for Yun-yun. She desperately needs to join the party as she appears to have no friends whatsoever. Just let her in already. Having two arch-wizards must be better than one, especially when the one you have can only blow things up.

Who was your favourite character?
It’s still Darkness, but only by the tiniest of margins. I love all of the characters and they all provide moments of sheer joy.

Who was your least favourite character?
It’s hard to look past the Axis Cult members. They were mental and unrelenting. It’s no wonder every one of the regular people there was close to breaking point. I can also understand why Hans would want to destroy the hot springs and get rid of them permanently. Sure, it was funny watching it happen to Kazuma, especially with the little girl, but could you imagine having to put up with that in real life?

Would you like some more?
Oh, yeah! Give me more, much more. I still have one more OVA and the movie to watch, but after that, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I can only assume that the adventure will not be over and I’ll have to continue reading the light novels (I’ve read the first one so far) and hope that more get made. This series has such a dry sense of humour, it just seems to resonate with my sense of humour. Bring me more!

What have you learnt?
One of the great things about KonoSuba is that there aren’t any accidents. Everything that happens does so because of something that they did. Aqua tries to fix something and it causes something worse to happen. Kazuma defeats the Destroyer, but that backfires. You can literally follow all the threads as they flow through the series and watch the consequences of their actions. It makes it really satisfying.
On top of that, the characters are all quite nicely developed which is funny as we generally don’t find out too much about them and their past. However, we’ve seen enough to know whether their actions are believable or not. It’s nice that they’ve been able to do that without bogging it down with backstory and exposition.
