What happened?

As they approached his home, Rudeus’ thoughts suddenly turned to Hitogami’s warning about him regretting leaving. He assumed that it must have something to do with Sylphie so he started running, leaving the rest of the party behind. He burst into his home and called, but no one answered. He checked the kitchen and it was clean and unused. Then, after he had almost lost hope, Aisha emerged and welcomed him home. She noticed his hand almost instantly but was just glad he was back. Then, Sylphie returned from outside with some firewood. Rudeus was pleased to see she was all right and then he quickly asked about the others. Everyone was fine.

Sylphie hugged him and welcomed him home. Everyone else caught up with Rudeus and came inside. They gathered in the living room, with Rudeus’ family in front of the fire. Once Norn arrived, Rudeus told her about the quest to save their mother. He told her how Paul died saving him and how Zenith had no memories and they were unlikely to come back. All they had left of Paul was his swords, his gauntlets, and his ashes. Norn asked to keep his big sword which prompted Rudeus to give her the talk that Paul once gave him. Lilya noticed and held back her tears. Then, Zenith grabbed Paul’s gauntlets and held them close to her chest. Did she remember something?

Mushoku Tensei II Jobless Reincarnation Episode 24 Sylphie notices that Roxy didn't go with the others

Soon after Elinalise went to see Cliff, while Geese, Talhand, and the others went to find an inn to stay at. Rudeus thanked them and told them he didn’t blame them for what happened to Paul. They told him that he shouldn’t blame himself either. Once they had gone, Rudeus turned to Sylphie and told her that they needed to talk about something. She glanced at Roxy who had remained behind. Did she already suspect that they had gotten together? Rudeus told Sylphie about how he almost lost the will to live until Roxy saved him. He wanted to thank her by making her his second wife. Norn was incensed and grabbed Rudeus, telling him off for doing that to Sylphie while they listened to her wondering about him every moment of every day he was gone. Then, she turned on Roxy who she assumed was no older than her. When Roxy told her that she was an adult, Norn asked if she felt no shame for what she did.

Roxy turned to leave, but before Rudeus could say anything else, Sylphie asked her to wait. She walked across the room and stood before Roxy. She told her that she had been jealous of Roxy because of how Rudeus talked about her, but now she felt that they were more alike. She accepted Roxy into the family and explained to Norn that neither she nor Rudeus were followers of Milis, so there was no issue. Roxy waited until Sylphie gave birth before making her marriage to Rudeus official. Rudeus went to his father’s grave to tell him all about his life, his daughter, Lucie, and how he was sorry that he never saw him as a father until it was too late.

What did you think?

One thing that I thought was interesting was how much Sylphie changed while Rudeus was away. I don’t mean in the sense that she had a bigger belly, but that she looked older and more like a mother already. Now, that might seem obvious, but considering how small Roxy is it felt like a complete shift in dynamics from when they used to be together back in their home town. It would also appear that Rudeus was spared because of his rampant horniness and the fact that Sylphie knew and accepted that. I’m not sure whether I wanted her to be more upset or not. It was a little too easy. However, I did like the parallels with Norn telling him off for having time for fun on his adventure which is exactly what Paul said to him when they met as he was travelling home with Eris and Ruijerd.

My favourite moment in this episode, however, was when Zenith grabbed Paul’s gauntlets and held them to her chest. It could have been an instinctive thing after seeing Norn grab his sword, but I feel like it was the first sign that she might regain her memories. I am delighted for Rudeus and his daughter, Lucie. I wonder if that’ll change his approach to life or not, but seeing as it’s got him two wives and as I saw on one message board, he’s already caught Bulbasaur and Squirtle which means he just needs to get Charizard. I’m not ashamed to say I laughed at that, my kids love Pokemon so that metaphor wasn’t lost on me.

And that brings us to the end of the second season and they’ve instantly announced that work on the third season has already begun. That’s great news. Even with the slower moments in this season, I’m excited to see where it goes next. I’m already considering looking into the light novels, although there are twenty-six volumes…

  1. I notice that having Norn voice all the arguments permitted Sylphie to keep the high ground when she welcomed Roxy in. With that, she is now not just Rudy’s wife, but the matriarch of Rudy’s family.

Speaking of, Rudy’s mother has an obvious affliction, but I don’t know about her memories actually being gone. They can’t exactly communicate with her properly, after all. She’s been asleep for a very long time, and her mind and body both need time and care to recover. Basically, it’s like waking up very, very slowly, not immediately recalling everything, but give it time, and I’m sure she’ll recover.

    • Agreed. Sylphie is undoubtedly the boss now and that showed with her new appearance too. It’s probably the longer white hair, but she looked like the wise mother, watching over the family.

I also agree with you here. The characters seem to have accepted that she has memory loss at this stage and since she doesn’t even seem to recognise them or remember how to speak, that’s probably the most favourable idea, rather than believing that she might have suffering brain damage.

  2. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was almost too easy for Rudy to convince Slyphie to allow him to marry Roxy. In the end, I am glad that Slyphie didn’t blow up and took the high road. I expected drama, but found that I liked that there wasn’t too much. After all, Paul had two wives and it all worked out.

    • Yeah. I think any sort of outburst from Sylphie would have killed it from the beginning. It was clever to use Norn in that sense and allow Sylphie to maintain her air of composure. I didn’t want drama either, but it really did feel too easy.

  3. Like Rudy said, going to try to save his mother isn’t something to regret. It made him very sad. He grieved. But I don’t think he regrets it.

He lost a father who was wallowing in self pity BEFORE he came but found himself again for a brief but glorious time BECAUSE he came. A good man would consider sacrificing themself for a wife or an offspring to be a fine way to go. Being himself now a hubby and a daddy and even a big bro, Rudy understands this. The people he cares for are more precious to him than his own life.

He gained his mother who might recover eventually. Even if her memories are gone, his aren’t. It is still his mother and the personality basics will still be there. I don’t believe her disk is permanently damaged or low level formatted.

And he lost a hand but OTOH he gained a Roxy. That’s a painful, yet pretty sweet deal. Eventually he’ll get a prosthetic or maybe even grow a new one. So unless there’s some hidden permutation yet to come down the line, while Rudy has things to grieve, there’s nothing to regret. He did his best and would have forever hated himself had he not gone.

    • Agreed. I still think Hitogami used the regret as a way to stop him from going. The reason is going to be the important part. Did he not want Rudeus to marry Roxy or save his mother? He’s a manipulative god so who knows why. Maybe killing the hydra will upset Orsted, the Dragon God. There’s a lot more to this than we’ve been told and Hitogami is at the centre of it. I’m certain of that.

    • Interesting, but this was the first time he went against his advice though.
